Whats This Warmoth Business?

Really? C'mon, man! :rollno:

I've had 8 Warmoth necks on various bodies, and though there were a couple I didn't take to - they stand hands and feet above most others (USA Custom Guitars is known to make good product, too). For fit, finish, selection of exotic woods, and overall quality of service...Warmoth is tough to beat. It gets better when one adds in choices of nuts, bridges, hardware, pups, and varied pieces parts. They don't have everything (and who does) - but they can certainly get one started on an instrument a fella or gal might be inclined to keep for life. Yup, they're that good :smug:

I think every bass player should cobble together at least one parts bass in their lifetime. Great fun, teach you a bit (wiring, soldering, sometimes minor woodworking) and when you're done you have a new bass. Granted it's a bass that you'll never recoup the price of but still...

You can get the bass you're thinking of without having to pay for a custom.

Here's mine, based on the cover of London Calling:

Been reading on here about Warmoth and I don't know what it is. Anybody able to shed some light?

Well, it's kinda odd that you've been "reading on here about Warmoth" and have no idea what it is. Perhaps I'm getting something lost in translation between British and American English. I'm guessing that if you've been a member since February, you might have been able to find out something about Warmoth.

Funny, I always thought this site was called "Talk"Bass, not "Look It Up First"Bass. I had to slog through 50 Fender P bass threads before I got to this one. Maybe you should go back and post your charming reminder in all of those too....

Ironically, you're supporting my point. Of those 50 Fender P-Bass threads, probably 43 of them were redundant. You might not need to slog quite so much, if those 43 new thread posters would have just asked in an existing thread, then contributed to the conversation. Not doing so is just lazy. And for the record...I am charming. :D

Funny how the fender guys never get told to look it up and its OK. I think you could choke a server with : which pickups? Which neck? Which bridge? Which pickguard? This dosent fit....help!, My p bass ..... , My J bass..... , etc. I think all new fender threads should be banned until they actually come out with something new. Lol

So really...you're supporting my point, too. You simply want the redundancy limited to Fender threads. Just look at any of the Fender threads like "P vs. J" or whatever. Guaranteed to find a response about searching first. It's just a response to the redundancy.

As for searching first - OP said he/she had been browsing the site and, I guess, wanted to initiate a chat about Warmoth. Sure, OP could have kept reading posts and came up with a pretty clear idea about Warmoth, but that wouldn't be as social. If Talkbass is to be just a database of info pertaining to basses and bass related gear, then it would be much more efficient to set it up like Wikipedia. I see Talkbass as a bass themed international e-hangout, and a successful one at that.

exactly. Information isn't the only reason, or even most important reason, that TB exists. It's all about the interactivity.

I agree wholeheartedly. Look, this is a cool place to share information, experiences, and ideas. But why always in a new thread? If folks would just stop being lazy, it wouldn't be so hard to find the wanted information. These new threads rely on someone who has the answer reading the first page at that exact moment. So many folks are posting so often (redundancy, again), that a new thread will be on page 8 in an hour. Common sense would dictate that one could ask better questions (and get better answers and discussion) in a thread in which already-interested TBers are subscribed. That's why there's a sticky in the "Basses" forum about the "best bass for metal". That question was asked multiple times every day! It's a little like walking up to a stock-boy in the cereal aisle in the market and asking, "Where are the Corn Flakes?".

That thread is funny, and I am an old fart, but I'm not trying to be mean. I spend a good bit of my down time at work (so I have that 12x) on TB, and that old fart has it right. I'm just trying to educate some of the newer users and make TB a little less cluttered.

Adding to the Warmoth discussion...I have an unlined Warmoth fretless neck on my PJ bass and it's awesome. Never needs adjusting because of the stabilizing rods, great craftsmanship in the production, and excellent customer service before and after the sale.

You cannot compair the ammount of warmoth threads to the number of Fender threads. And quite honestly if you look and read the threads here on warmoth you would think they are a fender only builder (that's all you see of them on here) . I don't mind multiple threads on the same topic unless that have been beat to death on a monthly bassis (like most of the fender threads in every forum ). Those aren't even so bad, but when they take up the first 3 pages and never get the "look it up " responce, its kind of lame to tell someone asking about something more obscure to do so.

The search function could be improved as well. Try looking up info on an ampeg svt 810 lol.

Having a Fender forum of its own might not be a bad idea as well.

The built in talkbass search sucks. A better way to search is to pull up http://www.google.com, and enter "site:talkbass.com warmoth" or "site:talkbass.com ampeg svt 810" or whatever you want to search for (without the parentheses). You can search on single or multiple words, or words 3 characters or less (which the tb search won't do). I've got two projects in the works, both of which are using warmoth precision necks. I happen to like jazz basses, but prefer precision sized necks ...

There's also this ... http://www.talkbass.com/forum/f8/warmoth-bass-porn-show-yours-too-836043/

I don't think it's lame at all. I think it helps the community. I wasn't comparing Fender threads to Warmoth threads...you were. Speaking of lame...I do agree with you completely that the search function could be improved and that a Fender forum is necessary with all of the Fender nuts here.

+1.

But many would ever know about that if old farts like me didn't call out folks for asking where the corn flakes are while standing in the cereal aisle.

Always nice to see Hachi's Jag!

Anyway, to continue the OT/thread hijack...

I found this entertaining.

Yes, it's absolutely horrible that one has to slog through 50+ posts to get an answer. The much easier (less time consuming? more direct? lazier?) way to do it is to ask your question in a new thread and circumvent all that awful slogging. Or, perhaps, make someone else do the slogging for you.

In my day, we had to slog through 500 posts. On a BBS. Both ways. Without a search function. Or mittens.

Also, people have this crazy idea that using the search somehow precludes them from asking their question. You can still "look it up first" and have your "talk" about it, too. The only difference is that after you do your search, you might not need to ask the question. Or you might have another, different, more focused question. Or, you could possibly discover a kernel of information, lost in the depths of the TB server for a decade, that will change your bass playing life forever.

Using the search function first doesn't lock up your keyboard and keep you from posting your thread. Really. Honest.

Happy to entertain you, but to come onto a thread for the sole purpose of telling someone to "look it up" is being a complete tool. If you don't feel like answering someone's question about a Warmoth bass then don't click on the thread. So simple.

I've attempted to use the search function on here and it sucks. So it IS easier in some instances for my LAZY butt to initiate an actual conversation with another human being on a.....FORUM?? What?? How dare I.....:scowl:

I do think the search function is underused but, to be honest, whenever the little 'how-to-search' widget is posted, I picture the nerds from the Simpsons, sitting around in a comp lab somewhere, cackling to themselves about setting the noobs straight.
