Funny, I always thought this site was called "Talk"Bass, not "Look It Up First"Bass. I had to slog through 50 Fender P bass threads before I got to this one. Maybe you should go back and post your charming reminder in all of those too....

Warmoth makes some great stuff. I have a customized Walnut body P/J style bass with a flamed maple neck and a fretless Madagascar ebony fingerboard. It plays like silk, looks like custom work, and sounds fantastic with no Fender trademark dead spot. Plays better than any Fender I have tried, and I have tried many.

Try getting Fender to make one of those for the $1,100 that I paid. I bet you can't !! If you can live without the Fender Logo, you can get a better than Fender bass in any configuration you like. Only downside is the resale. They don't hold value like brand name basses, but then if you are looking to trade around, it wouldn't be your cup of tea anyhow.

HAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! NICE!!!! :D

but anyway: yes, Warmoth makes pretty incredible stuff. I own a Warmoth Jaguar Bass that basically a Yamaha Attitude on steroids.

check that out, and look around the site a good bit. there's a ton of bass porn. oh, also: GET A RAW NECK!!! it took some convincing when I was putting it together, but I'm SOOOOO glad I did! completely smooth, and ended up being a little cheaper, too, since I didn't have to use a finish. it's also just more bass porn for myself and others to look at. :)

+100

Funny how the fender guys never get told to look it up and its OK. I think you could choke a server with : which pickups? Which neck? Which bridge? Which pickguard? This dosent fit....help!, My p bass ..... , My J bass..... , etc. I think all new fender threads should be banned until they actually come out with something new. Lol

One of the others above was dead correct, Warmoth parts are top notch (as good or better than any Fender Custom Shop part). Body and Neck style and wood choices are nearly unlimited - want a jazz style bass that looks and plays like a Warwick Thumb, just order a bubinga jazz body, a wenge/wenge neck with gold frets, then route it for MEC pickups and drop an MEC preamp and Warwick 2 piece bridge in it and you're better than 90% there.
You can build it yourself or have a local luthier assemble it for you.
Now the down sides - it's amazing how fast all the options start to add up in the cost. Even if you do the entire build yourself it's hard to complete a 4 string bass for much less than $1000. And when all is said and done and you completed the bass it will unfortunately have a resale of about $500 or less.
The only consolation on resale value is that a lot of people that build these basses end up never wanting to resell them because they are so darn good. I'd part with my Alembic and my Pedulla and my Fender MIA Deluxe Jazz 5 before I'd ever consider parting with either of my Warmoths. Mine plays, looks, feels and sounds better than any other bass I've ever played at any price (and I've played some darn pricy basses).
If you go the Warmoth route take the other poster's advice and select a raw neck that does not need a finish. I've done both and raw is by far the better option from a value standpoint.

Warmoth is great. I've had a few, and no complaints. But I'll comment on the original post, and the response of doing a search. I felt 'What's this Warmoth business?' to have a bit of an attitude. My first response was 'Do a search and find out!'. If he had asked 'I'd like to hear some experiences with Warmoth', I might have had a better feeling about it.

ah, that's just a language/cultural thing. Kinda like the Python "Right! What's all this then?" Just another shade of "What's the scoop on ______?" I could see myself phrasing the question the exact same way.

As for searching first - OP said he/she had been browsing the site and, I guess, wanted to initiate a chat about Warmoth. Sure, OP could have kept reading posts and came up with a pretty clear idea about Warmoth, but that wouldn't be as social. If Talkbass is to be just a database of info pertaining to basses and bass related gear, then it would be much more efficient to set it up like Wikipedia. I see Talkbass as a bass themed international e-hangout, and a successful one at that.

exactly. Information isn't the only reason, or even most important reason, that TB exists. It's all about the interactivity.

It's actually great to hear about the Warmoth build experience. I have found amazing deals on second hand basses, so I felt that building one would not be the most cost effective way to go. On the other hand, I have my own ideas about what I want in my dream bass.

Some of the Warmoth builds look fantastic, and the idea of having the experience of making a beautiful instrument appeals to me. Also you can bite off a little at a time, so the cost can be spread out.
