What's wrong with my Schroeder cab ?

I have a 1215L that has been great but it started making a rattling type noise. Not sure if the cab has been dropped or banged as my guitar player loaded the cab in the van for our last gig and I was not around to load it myself (left cab at his house after last practice).

I know I have to tighten the screws holding the grill every now and then, but the noise in your sample sounds more like a speaker rattling. Since you only have 2 speaker cones it should be easy to troubleshoot. I wonder, could it be the horn?
I also have started folding the cover that came with my 410L and using it as padding between my rack and the cab. One thing about Schroeder cabs - they vibrate more than other cabs I've used. Not that they're not braced, in fact the way they are braced is ingenious, I think. But they do vibrate quite a bit, maybe because they're so loud. And that vibration is transferred to anything it touches (like a rack, or the floor, or anything on the floor), as well as the air. Good vibrations, though.

I am not able to check out the clip, but on my 610L the screws holding the drivers were too tight. A quarter of a turn left and the rattling was gone. FWIW.

Hate to say it but I had this problem with every Schroeder cab I had. 1210L,1210R, and a 410L that I wanted to buy till I heard the same problem.

The same problem happened to me a few days ago. I tested everything, tightened all screws, used 1/4 rubber plug, checked the tweeter but when I opened the back panel I found the problem. It's the driver, exactly the same noise as yours. I just spoke with Jorg this morning and he will take care of it. Great guy.

I had the same problem with my 21012L. I emailed Jorg and he sent me a replacement immediately. The new one is doing it, too, unfortunately. I've been using my 1210L in the meantime, but I need to get down in there and troubleshoot. I suspect it's the same thing as mentioned here already:

I forgot to mention this, but when I received my 410L it had that sort of noise in the bottom forward firing speakers. I received a new speaker from Jorg (two days later!) and everything has been fine since then. The removed speaker tests OK with an ohmeter (3.2 ohms). I suspect it was just not mounted straight enough. Definitely try adjusting the tightness of the screws on the affected driver.

Good to know I'm not the only one with this problem. I've been trying to troubleshoot for the past week trying to stop the vibration in my 1212L. Its time to give Jorg a call . . .

wow, I've been having the same problem with my 1212L. I thought the cabinet just couldn't handel the E string at a moderate volume but I'll email Jorg for some advice.

Well that never entered my mind. I've only played this cabinet out once and the club owner never let me turn my LMII above 9 o'clock. Oddly enough, I couldn't hear myslef at all but my friend who's a musician watching the show said he could hear me great! I guess the cabinets throw sound well.

Take the grille off and gently push the speaker in/out a few times. If you hear a scratchy sound, it's blown.

Another possibility: Can't tell from the clip if the sound is the same as mine (1515+L) was making, but --- I took the grill off and dismounted the front mounted speaker, resecured the cables in the back - still buzzing. Finally, I happened to rest my finger on the exterior trim ring of the tweeter - buzzing stopped altogther. The metal trim ring (decorative, printed, sits in an indent outside the perimeter of the tweeter on the housing) was not glued in properly. The loose part was buzzing its little heart out. Removed the ring and haven't looked back. Hope this helps somebody.

In almost every cab in which the problem WAS NOT solved by a new driver, the problem is likely the same:

The joint in the rear right of the cabinet where the "folded" driver's plywood mounting joins the back corner of the box has come loose. A little gorilla glue will fix the problem.

How to diagnose:

Unfasten the crossover plate from the rear of the cabinet ( leaving connections in place), OR remove your grille.

wedge your fingertip right into the furthermost corner where the angled plate meets the rear corner joint.

Play whatever notes cause the problem you're hearing. If you can feel vibration and the joint is loose, there's your problem.

CAREFUL!! If the problem has gone unattended to for some time, you may get a nasty pinch!!

THE FIX: Take the grille off........ liberally apply gorilla glue to the vertical joint at the rear corner. Then lay the cabinet face-down on the ground so the weight of the plate and driver(s) will put pressure on the seal while drying.

Had the same thing happen with my Mini112L+! I noticed there were four holes under the trim ring that blow air out if you take it off so I reglued the ring and that fixed it!

Update:

Sent the cab back and Jorg said at a certain frequency the speaker wire was hitting the cone of the 15 so he took care of it and is sending it back to me this week.

When I took the cab a part I check for the wire hitting the cone and it looked like it was not but I guess when I put the speaker back in the wire must get pushed near the cone.

Anyway Jorg is a great guy to deal with and really provides incredible customer service !!!! Can't say enough about him and his cabs.

Glad Jorg got you back in business. He has built a well-deserved reputation for good customer service (Not to mention being a fun character to deal with).

When I took the cab a part I check for the wire hitting the cone and it looked like it was not but I guess when I put the speaker back in the wire must get pushed near the cone.

I've had this issue so many times that when I open up the cab, I remount all the wiring so it can't possibly reach any moving parts. (As your cabinet illustrated) Only then can you be sure you've ruled out wandering wiring as a noise source.

I had a buzzing/rattling issue with my 412L when recording recently. We had to remove the grille, and the noise stopped. It was a huge pain in the ass getting it back on at the end of the session, let me tell you.
