What's wrong with simplicity?

Wow, all of your lines sound like a bunch of unrhythmic numbers all placed in a line which mean nothing to us. Impressive.

Simplicity, IMO, is the greatest thing to ever happen to music. I mean, Bach played a 78 string bass, and never even touched the root notes, and he sucked.

Er, yeah. I like simple songs. Simple, in the right context = catchy. Catchy in the right context = damn cool. Catchy in the wrong hands can lead to true evil.

But then again, complex bass lines DO have their place in music.

You sound like such a guitar player. BASS PLAYER!! WHAT ARE YOU DOING!! PLAY ONLY ROOT NOTES AND TURN DOWN YOUR DAMN VOLUME, I CAN HARDLY HEAR MY 98 STRING GUITAR SOLO!!!

Technique? Theory? Huh? What are these? I just want to see people dance.

Cool. For me, music is something where I please myself. If it so happens to please someone else, then great! But I think that music is a personal thing, and you should please yourself first. If this means knowing theory and such, do it (I do). :)

But c'mon, just riding out roots is too simple. [/B]

Not if it is what the song neads. Lets face it we have all sometime just for the fun of playing wanderd out and just started ripping it out on the bass during rehearsals but where dous that get you. You have two guitarplayers looking at you in confusion wondering what the hell you´r doing. But you sure had some fun didnt you.

The most important thing if you are a bassist is in my opinion is to know when to let loose and rip it out and when to lay back pounding nice simple lines locked in tight with your drummer. Listen to John Myung he can shred like hell but he also many times just lays back and grooves. His bassparts never sound out of place or exesive even if he´s playing some fast complex stuff.

I agree less is more under "some" circumstanes. Have you ever gone and seen a cover band play and watch the bass player that plays every song wrong? Puts no effort in learning the correct fingering, just barely playing the root notes. You know the guy that's just too lazy to learn the song right and takes away from the whole feeling, emotion, and sound of the song? The guy that plays so basic and lazy that he makes every drunk in the audiance think that playing the bass is easy and they and anyone can do it? Well I am just responding to his post! I take offense to what you said. This is the first time I have ever, ever been upset at someone here. Just buy a drum machine and push play, why even play? So you can watch girls dance from the stage while you ride your E string collecting an easy paycheck? Ooops I'm sorry since you have no clue how to play and don't care to undertsand your instrument you don't know what an E string is.
