What's your biggest grammatical pet peeve?

Hilarious.

Dictionaries were compiled originally by people who wanted to create a reference that documented the way people used language. I'm not sure anyone at that time suggested that these were books meant to keep people using the language in exactly that same way throughout the rest of time.

But here we are :)

It bugs me that dictionaries change the meanings of words to reflect the misuse of the language by morons.

Pretty sure they'd say they're just doin' their job. ;)
A Word on 'Descriptive' and 'Prescriptive' Defining

We certainly dude get around. Like Webster's Dictionary, we're more-ocker-bound.

From Wiki,
The Macquarie Dictionary (/məˈkwɒri/) is a dictionary of Australian English. It is generally considered by universities and the legal profession to be the authoritative source on Australian English.

Australia's words of the year for 2022 were:
"teal" ( an independent political candidate who holds generally ideologically moderate views, but supports strong climate action and prioritising integrity in politics) and
"bachelor's handbag" ( a supermarket takeaway chicken, named for the fact it requires no preparation before eating and often comes in a small plastic bag with a handle, resembling a handbag).

We're doing our bestest. Boldly. Going. Going. Gonzo!!!!

I love what R. L. Trask writes, about the choice of using 'vs' versus 'versus,' in Mind the gaffe! : a troubleshooter's guide to English style and usage. Why not write it out? he opines.

I agree with him, wholeheartedly, on most things. Mind the Gaffe! is a good book (I've made the claim before:wacky:). It looks better, it reads better. If you're going to claim something, if you believe you have a point, and you're in the communication game, have some conviction. It's only a few letters, after all. YMMV, etc.;) TTFN.

i'm in the communication game. i make a living writing and editing. that being said, when i'm not working, i only use lower case letters most of the time, and i expect that's someone's grammatical pet peeve.

When I ask a coworker about a particular item we carry and she says, “We don’t got that in stock.” A little part of me, the part that cares, the part that thinks it matters, the part that thinks if we continue on like this the world as we know it will crumble, that part dies a little bit. I’m close to not caring at all. The Catholic nuns who taught me in grade school? If I talked like that they would be rolling in their graves! I continue the fight for them because no one deserves an uncomfortable afterlife. Speak properly, people, for the sake of dead nuns who can’t sleep.

LOL

"don't got" is one of my pet peeves, too.

What drives me up the wall are what I perceive to be out right laziness. Bastardizing words because folks are too lazy to enunciate. Is it that much more work to pronounce a word or series of words correctly?

Oh. Thank you. That means a lot:)

All the feminists at uni bucked the punctuation game in a similar manner — said it was a construct of the boofy boys club and they wouldn't have a bar of it. Lots of poets especially did as you do.

If it makes you happy, I'm all for it. Life's too short.
