Here's where we can talk about what our perfect rig would be (and cry about how we will never have it.)
As a budding rock bassist my dream rig goes...

Basses:
1975/76 Gibson Ripper Orange Sunburst/Ebony Board. (Finish like this except fingerboard:)

1975/76 Gibson Ripper Gold/Gold Painted Board
1975/76 Gibson Ripper Royal Blue/Royal Blue Painted Fretboard
1975/76 Gibson G3 Black/Maple Board
1980 Gibson G3 Natural/Maple Board

Amps:
2x Hartke HA5500 Heads
8x Hartke 810 Hydrive Cabs

Leads:
Fender Leads

Picks:
Fender Heavy Gauge
Fingers

Pedals:
BOSS ODB-3 Overdrive (Watch Nirvana's Live At Reading at 1 minute and 28 seconds for the sound I'd get with it. Then watch the first song. The intro is just phenomenal. And then the whole concert if you have time.)
BOSS RC-1 Looper (Watch the second video down. I'd play that.)
BOSS TU-3 Tuner (Of course.)
BOSS CH-1 Chorus (I LOVE Duff McKagan's sound on Use Your Illusion, so I'd use my chorus occasionally.)
BOSS BF-3 Flanger (Flangers kick ass. Need I say more? No.)
BOSS PS-6 Harmonist (Don't know what it is, but it sounds AWESOME!)

I thought about saying something about that, as well as the need for two cabinets each the size of a refrigerator, but decided to chalk it up to “different strokes for different folks.” But honestly, a 2-10 cabinet would be plenty, unless they don’t have any PA systems with subwoofers where you live and you really do need a serious enough rig to fill the room. I have a 1-12 Aguilar speaker myself.

1. vintage SVT heads, each on their own 8x10, as few or as many lined up as i needed for the gig

2. somebody else to move them :)

funny thing about "dream bass rigs", the bigger the gig and thus the more money you'd have to buy said rig, the bigger and better the PA and thus the less need for any kind of bass rig at all!

what's geddy's dream rig? washing machines? rotisseries?

(OK, a wall of vintage portaflex B15s stacked 3 high and 6 across would be fun!)

I pretty much have my dream rig right now. I start my sound with a Reddi for the house and the through signal then goes to my Ampeg SVT 3-Pro amp and Ampeg Heritage SVT 410 stack for stage. Amazing setup that gives me the best sound I've ever had. I then would you one of my 2 Ibanez SR Prestige basses.

I bought an Aguilar Tonehammer 500 and a Bergantino NV115 this year. pretty dang happy with this set up, easily handles my needs.

I also have a '71 Fender P and an NS NXT4 EUB that is my main instrument. I've gotten it pretty sweet with new strings, tuners and a good pre.

So now I am mostly dreaming about being a better musician...

For a bass you'll want an Epiphone EB-3 or Squier Mike Dirnt P bass. They;re the lightest basses I've ever seen.
