What's your gig?

Original rock, playing small clubs. We are transitioning to a more studio-based project. My next band will be a high-energy commercial disaster.
That is awesome. Being commercial is highly overrated anyway, IMO.

I play music rooms, house concerts, or bars/eateries with a music space on the side/in the back separate from the bar/restaurant area.

I currently play in 1 corp/variety/dance band, we do weddings, corp. work, parties, play in 1 bar for a Fri. Happy Hour gig. Play in 2 tribute bands (The Cure, Billy Idol), mostly larger venues, festival type gigs, occasional bar gig.

Also play in an R&B cover group, not much work lately, couple of bar/restaurant gigs were the norm. Also play in an alternative rock group (used to be just 90's alt/grunge, we are now all over the map, 60's to 2000's), we are in multiple dive bars, and last but not least, a MOR rock band, mostly 80's radio hits, maybe 3,4 gigs a year with them, a couple corp things, a church festival in the summer.

So, 6 groups currently...man, I WISH I could say I didn't have a day job, but the band stuff not enough $teady work to drop the day gig.
MJ

Covers & originals, no set list(s), we do callouts(if 2 or 3 of us are familiar with the song...we're doing it).

Restaurant/bar places, tailgate parties, cook-offs, private parties(ballrooms or backyards), corporate events, charity events. The last "dive" type place was a biker charity event 3 years ago....fortunately it was not in Waco.

Primarily a mix of dive bars and clubstaurants, with a peppering of festival / wedding / corporate.
2 Originals bands, 1 father-son duo, 70's covers (rock and funky) and lately modern country.

Lots of recording work.

very part time Garage / post-punk cover - original band > small clubs, dives, local festivals / events.
Do some studio work on occasion.
Have another offer to help out a new forming project to record, do some light touring with a festival here and there.

Great thread!

Really helps give perspective.

We should add pay too.

1.) main band - traditional bluegrass band. Originals and bluegrass classics. I play upright and my wife sings. We also have mando, guitar and banjo. Mostly local. Play about 2-3 times a month. We play bars, coffee shops, small stages, festivals and lots of events downtown. $100/person.

2.) original project - all originals Americana type. We are a trio - upright, guitar and mando. We play wineries and breweries in the finger lakes area. Lots of travel for about $30-$50/person. Debating quitting. Lots of work and travel for little dough but the songs our guitar player writes are great. Tough call.

3.) Teddy and friends gig. I am lucky to know many musicians and I have been doing a gig every month where I bartend. I play bass and have guitar, mando, harp, banjo, my wife, whoever can join play. $50/per person. Little setup and right in town. Fun to play with different guys who are pretty good.

My wife and I have been asked on occasion to do songs for people's wedding or receptions or stuff like that as well.

Band #1, is a blues/rock band. We play a set monthly schedule, 6 gigs at the same joints, the same night of the month each month. Dive bars and restaurants. 50/50 originals/covers.
Band #2, singer/songwriter original act, second call bassist. Mostly nicer clubs, concerts or parties. once or twice a month.
Band #3, Female fronted soul, blues, rock. Etta James, Amy Winehouse kind of stuff. 70/30% covers, 4-5 gigs a month, Mostly doing showcase, festival type of gigs as or singer is young and looking to make a name for herself.
Band #4, Female fronted cover band, 3-4 nights a month. This is the most versatile band I work with playing corporate events, Private parties, High end restaurants/lounges, brewerys and dive bars. Band size varies based on need for the gig. Duo up to 5 piece.
I also do some semi regular sub work for a few different people. Some Southern rock, classic rock, funk and even some bluegrass.

It seems like there is a lot of disagreement over topics and I think much of it centers around different types of gigs and one person taking another's comment and applying it directly to their gig which probably doesn't make sense. So share your gig! Who is doing dive bars? Who's doing wedding bands, churches, brother in law's BBQ, etc, etc?

Original heavy rock, the goal is at least a gig a month, though two gigs would be great if we can swing it. They only had two gigs before firing their previous bassist and giving me the job, and we’ve only had a couple of small gigs since I joined (a party and a skater store) while we waited for venues to have openings for us. Friday night we play a small club. Given the nature of the music, we’ll be focusing on clubs and bars, throughout our local area as well as down into San Francisco. We are all in our 40s and some of us have a full schedule of day job and kids, so this is just for fun, though I am totally opposed to playing free shows, unless it’s a benefit of course. Of course, I expect to get outvoted on occasion LOL

Like the bar I stopped into
What do you guys mean exactly by saying a "dive bar band " ? I beg your pardon for I haven't heard that expression before !
Like the bar called Bubba's Place I stopped into tonight outside seattle for a quick lager, and cuz I had to pee ... an old condom dispenser above the trough in the men's room, with no mirror, filled with patrons etchings on every painted surface of the stall door that wouldn't completely close. Don't even ask about the year or shape of the carpets and mismatched seating. And you can still smell the stale smoke from a decade ago when the state went smokeless indoors. Some big guy named Buzz ultimately spanked me in 8-ball, after I sunk some lucky shots. But the drinks were cheap, & there was no pretentiousness there ... I dug it

Hi Mr. @nixdad ,

I play only in an "acoustic" Beatles band with 7 other buddies, most of which I've known for 30+ years. I share bass duties, so when I'm not playing bass, I play percussion. The group has 3 acoustic guitars, a keyboard player, a guy on cajon/hi-hat, another who plays flute, and 2 on bass (I play a Rickenbacker, the other bassist plays a Rogue violin bass.) Everyone sings except me, so with 7 vocalists, the group nails the harmonies. The group is primarily made up of guys from 3-4 different bands. I left stopped playing back in 1988, so I felt like the luckiest guy in the world to be asked to be a part of this group.

The band stemmed from all of us playing at one of the guy's 50th birthday party 4 years ago. All of the other guys play in multiple bands, so they're busy. We played 6 times this year, anywhere from city events (Friday night series, summer concert) to private events. My goal is for us to play as often as possible and as my job allows. I travel a fair amount for work, so this works out great for me.

Would this be the "Fab Eight" with Steve, Doug, Dale, Matt, etc?

Thank you for your indulgence,

Hey Cliff -
It is the Fab 8. I'm the original bassist for LCR ('79-'88), and had noticed on their website recently that there is a photo of you subbing for Dale - too cool! I left the band back then because I was too busy managing The Bass Centre and responsible for a good portion of the sales. Because we were primarily a casuals band, most of our gigs we're on Saturdays when I could not leave the shop, so I had to step away as it was not fair to the group to constantly find a sub at that point.

How did you meet the Doug, Dale, Matt and Steve, and how do you know about the Fab 8? BTW, Steve is not in the group, as we do not have a drummer - Doug is on cajon. Just like Spinal Tap, LCR went through a boatload of drummers in the early 80's, and I believe Steve joined us sometime 1984. He's a solid drummer and excellent vocalist.

I'm still looking forward to making it to one of your gigs and meeting you at a KRB gig. I'll make that happen sometime in the next few months.

Chris

It really happened - here are the pix:

A dive bar is a place where beers are relatively cheap.... but, they can't get more then 25-30 on a weekend because the place needed a paint job 30 years ago and could barely pass a health code inspection. Thus.... the place is a dive.
