What's your gig?

Hi Chris! (@nixdad )

Hey Cliff -
It is the Fab 8. I'm the original bassist for LCR ('79-'88), and had noticed on their website recently that there is a photo of you subbing for Dale - too cool! I left the band back then because I was too busy managing The Bass Centre and responsible for a good portion of the sales. Because we were primarily a casuals band, most of our gigs we're on Saturdays when I could not leave the shop, so I had to step away as it was not fair to the group to constantly find a sub at that point.

How did you meet the Doug, Dale, Matt and Steve, and how do you know about the Fab 8? BTW, Steve is not in the group, as we do not have a drummer - Doug is on cajon. Just like Spinal Tap, LCR went through a boatload of drummers in the early 80's, and I believe Steve joined us sometime 1984. He's a solid drummer and excellent vocalist.

I'm still looking forward to making it to one of your gigs and meeting you at a KRB gig. I'll make that happen sometime in the next few months.

Chris

It really happened - here are the pix:

Very cool. Good to meet you (electronically, anyway)! I've seen the Fab 8 at both of the above venues, Memorial Park in Claremont and in front of the Laemmle Theater. My 16yo daughter loves The Beatles. We catch all the Beatles tributes we can.

I got involved with LCR through Steve. He and I played on the worship team at church. Steve and Matt have both done sub work in another band I used to be in. Now I'm on Doug's email list for his performances. I catch his various ensembles when I can. Doug has been wanting to start an acoustic trio and asked me to join in but I've just been too busy. Maybe in January when I slow down a little bit.

Nice chatting with you. Take care. :)

Thank you for your indulgence,

BassCliff

It seems like there is a lot of disagreement over topics and I think much of it centers around different types of gigs and one person taking another's comment and applying it directly to their gig which probably doesn't make sense. So share your gig! Who is doing dive bars? Who's doing wedding bands, churches, brother in law's BBQ, etc, etc?
Theatres, Dive bars, higher end bars/clubs, festivals/fairs, restaurants, legions, private functions.
Somehow - never done the wedding thing (except my own and a couple of cousins') - but wouldn't be opposed to that.

Hey Cliff -
Small world, isn't it. Thanks for coming out! Unfortunately, Memorial Park was a rough gig, but oh well. :banghead:

I hope to see you soon,
Chris

The kind of bar you hope your daughter never goes to.

Like the bar I stopped into

Like the bar called Bubba's Place I stopped into tonight outside seattle for a quick lager, and cuz I had to pee ... an old condom dispenser above the trough in the men's room, with no mirror, filled with patrons etchings on every painted surface of the stall door that wouldn't completely close. Don't even ask about the year or shape of the carpets and mismatched seating. And you can still smell the stale smoke from a decade ago when the state went smokeless indoors. Some big guy named Buzz ultimately spanked me in 8-ball, after I sunk some lucky shots. But the drinks were cheap, & there was no pretentiousness there ... I dug it

A dive bar is a place where beers are relatively cheap.... but, they can't get more then 25-30 on a weekend because the place needed a paint job 30 years ago and could barely pass a health code inspection. Thus.... the place is a dive.

These were some both really funny and graphic descriptions, thanks for the laughter you guys !:laugh:

Now that I know what it means I can say, I've played in bars like these, but luckily with my last (and current) band we got to play in some really well-known places of the rock venue, playing along with some of the big bands of nowadays in my country. However, I do like playing in small bars, being so close to the audience, plus, bar owners tend to be much more grateful than those bigger places ( I know this is no news but it really shouldn't be that way) .

Oldies band, mostly 60's British Invasion. Gig once or twice a month.

Church band, gig 7 times a year. No electrics except my bass. Two acoustic 6-strings, one 12 - string, violin, flute, accordion, no drum kit but a variety of percussion. One rehearsal and then play the next week. Always a fun event.

For sure.... I'm in the Detroit area, and you really have to pick and choose the right place, at the right time. But, I hear you... I'd rather play a packed bar before a empty concert hall anyday....

Different projects, different gigs... The main one for me is the "acoustic guitar - vocals" that I play my original stuff at, and I mostly play in cafes and galleries, sometimes at poetry readings or exhibition openings. But that's the main only because of my preference, it's not the most usual and most probable gig that I get. The ones I most often do are duo gigs with a friend who plays a classical guitar and I shift between acoustic guitar and a uke. We both sing, the repertoire is mostly composed of different singer-songwriters' songs plus a lot of ethnic music that we both like a lot. So we play a lot of Dylan, Waits, Nick Drake, Cohen and such, plus a number of Cuban songs, our native Croatian or extended ex-Yugoslavian, both folk or contemporary pop songs. We play mostly at beach bars through the summer, but people also like to invite us to some birthday parties or other kinds of private celebrations, usually joining us with singing along... Then I also play a lot of solo acts that combine my own originals and singer-songwriter covers, where, combined with what I previously numbered, I add some Jeff and Tim Buckley's songs, Fred Neil, Joni Mitchell, John Martyn etc. I don't have a lot of original songs to play, I started writing songs just a few years ago, so I have to fill in with others' songs, but I will use less and less of that as I progress with writing my own stuff. Now, for the next summer I've just started preparing a repertoire for a pop band, bass, drums guitar and vocals, to get some club gigs, most of the stuff we'll be playing is ordinary pop-charts stuff, Adele, U2, Depeche Mode, Seal, Amy Winehouse, Sam Smith, that sort of stuff. We hope to get some fill-in gigs for the next summer between our regular ones, because we all play in different bands otherwise, and most of us used to play together for years and we don't need a lot of rehearsals, so we'll try to put it together soon. The one thing I still haven't been able to put together yet is a band for my originals, that I play solo at the moment, but that's because I live in a region where it's extremely hard to find some kinds of musicians, like vibraphonists or violinists, and I insist on having those instruments in the set up. If a chance opens for that I'll grab it. That would also include finishing my album and trying to get some festival gigs as well, possibly even organising a tour...

I'm part of a non professional Jazz Quartet with drums, sax and piano/keys since few months. Until now we made bar, restaurant, outside special event. We're ready to play anywhere if conditions aren't too raw. Our goal would be to play on few jazz festivals around here as an off act.
