what's your Shuttle attitude?

I don't know about anybody else, but I'm starting to be amused. I don't own a Shuttle nor have I ever played through one, but I just have a feeling that this thread is going to be a good read. We're barely to page #2 and the tension is building.

Well, you know this *is* TalkBass! Lately, it's the Shuttle that's getting the constant drone of great, great, great, great, great, great, and saying anything, anything at all, that varies tends to bring out the worst in those who are partisan (read: have bought a Shuttle!).

Tried it in the store and liked it 8/10, but then I tried an LMII and liked it 10/10. Suffice to say, they're both great amps!

For the record, I would love to try out a Shuttle 6.0. Just haven't got around to it yet. GenzBenz customer service is impressive enough on it's own to entice me. I'm still trying to decide if I like the 'TB approved' Markbass SA450 I just purchased. The jury is still out. (My band is not impressed so far). It takes a lot for a piece of gear to earn it's way into my permanent gear family. Maybe someday the 6.0 will have it's chance.

They're hard to find in L.A. I like clean power and don't mind tubes, but don't like a lot of EQ...

Oh no, quite amused. Opinions about gear are very subjective. I read some people's comments about the gear that I use that are completely opposite to my experience. Oh well. It works for me. As with most postings on discussion boards, people should be less inclined to state their observation as fact. Personally, I couldn't care less if no one else like the Shuttle. It does what I want it to and that's all I need.

I've had a 3.0-10T for a couple of weeks now and absolutely love it. Keep in mind that I don't have extensive experience with much other lightweight gear but I have played the little GK combo, some small Eden Nemesis combos, H&K Quantum combos and a few others.

I prefer the tone of the 3.0 to my Traynor YBA-200. It's prompted me to look at getting another amp for my bigger rig.

Overall, I couldn't be happier with the Shuttle

I test- drove a Shuttle to see if it compared to my LMII. The Shuttle is warmer, but that's where the better comparisons stopped. The Shuttle is rated 100 watts louder than the Markbass, yet the Markbass was notably louder. The Markbass has contained low end and upper mid slice that I just don't get from the Shuttle. The Shuttle kind've occured to me like a "sounds great on the sales floor, not-so-much at the gig" type and judging from the low end warmth and lack of slice. Keep in mind though, I've used the Markbass on gigs and have never used a Shuttle on that application so all of this is subjective to conjecture.

Because really, until I saw the wording of yours, I didn't care that much what people think about the Shuttle. It just seems like you're trying to say that all Shuttle fans hate other amps and have poor opinions of those who like other amps.

Or maybe I'm just cranky. Good chance of that, actually ... so, my apologies for derailing your thread man ... I'll just shut up now.

I own a 3.0T combo, with 1x10 extension cab.
So, I'm playing through two 1x10 cabs.

I've not played the 6.0. ( I've hear great things)

I bought the 3.0 because I only needed 300 watts.

But the tone, and total volume of my rig.
Is not to my liking.

And at a $1200.00 investment.
I'm not a happy camper?

See, that's your problem... you have two 1-10s and a 300w amp. If you had two 1-12s and a 600w amp you'd be much happier.

I AM a big fan of the shuttle ( you might have already guessed that), but I feel I can still express negatives about it. I know some people on this board talk like a commerical and there is never ANY hint of possible negatives of the amp. That alway trips the alarm bells for me.

Here's what I dont like:

1. The push button filters have so far proved useless to me. The only one I'd have use for, the low boost, I find just increasing the bass eq sounds better.
2. In order to get 'my' favourite tone, I have to EQ it significantly which eats up headroom, which means, overall, its not as loud as say... the LMII (even though the LMII is rated 100w less).
3. I dont like the grindy tube character you get when you play louder. I know thats not really a fault of the amp, some see it as a feature, but I like clean tone.
4. I wish the on/off switch was on the front. Get rid of those filters to make room for it!

My .02 for what its worth.

That said (here come the pom-poms) I love this freakin' amp! Its super light, has tons of useful features and most importantly the EQ'd tone I DO get is simply heartstoppingly beautiful.

If thats too much cheerleading for you, just read above a few sentences, starting with number one etc.

I like my shuttle alot, but I'm pretty sure the LMII is louder. I had my shuttle's master vol. at 11:00, gain at noon and gain vol. control maxed. On my LMII I'd rarely get past 10:00. 1212R was the cab.

As a point of note, the knob positions have very little to do with maximum potential output volume, thus the relative positions are highly arbitrary between units. The only way to correctly compare the available maximum volume of two amplifiers is to crank up each amplifier's master volume to the point where the power section clips/limits.

Now that's what I like! A guy that admits love but sees the flaws and is willing to state them. Thanks for your excellent and informative post and I mean that sincerely. This kind of balanced appraisal is rare on TB!

Thanks! Of all the amps I've played and owned I've never found an amp that is perfect. The Carvin B1500 is close, but there is no way I will carry a 45LB+ (racked) amp.

The shuttle IS close to perfect for me where it counts... tone.

The good - You can find them online new for around 500 bucks at the right retailer. Light, compact, great for those that travel alot or have back injuries.

The Bad - It doesn't sound like a bass amp, it sounds like I am playing my bass through a home stereo. I found it difficult to cut in a live situation.
