When a girl asks you to play something..

Just Play some slap bass and in your deepest voice Sing...

"hey Pretty mama, You wanna hear my funky Jam?"

"C'mon baby gonna slap that bass, all night long for you"

Then make up some improv about what she is wearing and how good she looks...
while continuing to slap...
Go back into the chorus, and then when your done put down you bass.
and smoothly say..

"your damn right"
Like from the shaft theme

I guarantee she will be impressed... lol..

lol

Portrait of Tracy, Continuum, or Amerika by Jaco.

Your best bet is to learn to sing and play at the same time, though. My experience was that if they were even bothering to ask, they were already interested. Talking to them did the same job that playing bass did.

"Is You Is Or Is You Ain't My Baby," the Tom & Jerry version!

+100

LOVE IT!!! Absolutely classic, and the cartoon is just bonus.

This would be in the key of Dm/Fmaj, BTW. Most other versions I've heard are in Am/Cmaj.

I can see by some of the posts since my last one that we should perhaps be delineating whether or not it's "play it solo" or "play as a band." I have interpreted the OP as intending "solo," and responded as thus, although some of the suggestions that are obviously "band" might also work as "solo" (e.g. Longview).

Granted, I'd grab my upright and bow, and the girl who I'd serenade is my wife. But still, one can't go wrong with the melodies to some of the great ballads:

In a Sentimental Mood
Lush Life
My One and Only Love
Round Midnight
Body and Soul
As Time Goes By

I've found out that Cliff Burton's Anesthesia is pretty melodic when you play it without that stupid wah pedal and grinding distortion. Especially the first part where he plays simple arpeggiated maj and min chords around the twelth fret is pretty sweet sounding + the first part is very simple and any douchebag can do it.

:ninja:

Play some RHCP girls dig them.
Or play Brick House or something they'll recognize.

Brick House is what I do, cause I am the same way. I can't really think of anything to play. Sometimes I do Winner At A Losing Game by Rascal Flatts (yea yea, hush ok!) or Beatles Daytripper...but when my boyfriend and I go to places like the GC, he will get on a bass and start slapping some thing (he knows I melt when he slaps:cool:) and then he hands me the bass to play and my mind goes :help:, BLANK! But I only have little over two years under my belt on bass- and he has like 30 or so!
