When a girl asks you to play something..

Back in 1986 I met a girl on a cruise ship and we were getting close and hanging out and I wanted to get closer and blah-dee-blah... anyway, one night they had a Passenger Talent Show and she begged me to play something on bass since we'd only just met & she'd obviously never heard me play, so -- reluctantly, I hasten to add -- I agreed. Borrowed a nice Fender Jazz Bass from the ship's band bassist, and played "Continuum" for a packed auditorium.

Modest applause at the end. I go back to sit next to Miss I-Wanna-Get-In-Yer-Pants, and she says "That was...interesting. It sounded like whale calls."

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Lovin' and Touchin' from RHCP. It's a breeze to play and I can't sing while I play...except for this song. The singing follows the line so it's not hard, even for me. Give it a go! It has never failed to impress.

On a side note, I am going to learn "Is You Is or Is You Ain't My Baby" right now!!!

Uch, reminds me of this horrible girl that would come sit on the amp of anyone that was practising bass at college and turn all of the low EQ up, bad times...

I usually go with my coolest Flea line that I'm capable of the time, plus it shows that I can play bass "properly" too instead of just with a pick. Or if they like punk then I'll do my almost competent after 5 years of playing it rendition of Maxwell Murder by Rancid, or sometimes regardless just cos it's pretty wanky. Plus if was a bit drunk I'm probably good enough at playing the lines for the verse and chorus to sing it in my rubbish Tiiim Aaaahmstwwooong voice :p

I usually start with Jamiroquai - Runaway, a groovy line that looks impressive to others :D and pretty suitable to improvise on.

Then continue with some improvised chords & slapping, slow it down and...

Just play the first seconds of RHCP - Californication. I'm sure you will be begged to go on :D

this is the reason im glad i play guitar. 5 minutes and anything top 40 is in the bag.

it can be a lot more expressive on its own. same with piano. its easy to sing over.

no one ever asks to hear pop songs on a saxophone or something. some instruments just work better. few people have ever asked me to play something on a bass because they wanted to hear the song.

however.. every time i touch an acoustic guitar, song titles just get shouted out

i love the idea of the cello suites in general. it's something you can find easily in the music store, and easy enough you could figure it out without resorting to tabs.

but i'd also like to add the following two songs to this list.
southbound pachaderm by primus. very easy. very cool.

aragon (asturias) - a classical guitar song but everything is played in the bass clef except the pedal tones. and you can forget those. great tune, also great for learning to transpose on the fly.
