"When in doubt get a Warwick"

So he loaned you his bass for the recording, you immediately did some "clean up" work to it (without asking, I presume - since you didn't mention that he OK'd it), and now you want to charge the guy for it ? Seriously ? Remind me never to be kind and loan you something. It seems to me that cleaning up the bass should be repayment for his loaning you the bass, attending a rehearsal, and caring enough to take the steps to make your recording sound good.

Just my opinion.

This.

compression and abit of chorus here or there.. but nope, his sound is the posterboard of the thumb sound with slight mid boost. My warwick thumb 6NT(that I just got yesterday :hyper:) nails that sound to a T.

I had 3 Thumb Basses that we're the older ones and could never get a sound I liked. If I had the low end growl dialed in, the high end was very weak (low volume)

Seems a bit strange to ask a bassist to use a pick if he's not used to using one. The only thing I can think of is a pick will have a much more sharply defined attack which will help pinpoint the timing more clearly.

Or the engineer just thinks bass should sound in a certain way - what you hear as warmth he hears as mud and what you hear as harsh is his clarity etc.
