When new becomes used!

My local gc has a nice breedlove acoustic bass in stock, i have played it several times. This bass has been hanging on the wall for 5 years! Every tom dick & harry have played it. It now has plenty of scatches a few dings & the strings look like something out of a john carpenter film! The price is $799.00 listed as new stock! This bass is not new stock in my world, am i missing something here.

I had a Gretsch 2220 bass for awhile, same thing, marked as new but had a ton of play wear from being "loved" in the store.

Told them I wanted to order the identical bass at that cost and asked when I could get a "new" one. The salesman said there's one right there on the wall. I pointed out all the scratches and marks and they knocked $40 off. It was much less expensive than $799.

Just a thought.

Demo basses are technically new since they haven’t been sold.
They should definitely discount it and advertise it as a demo or open box.

Retailers that want to move old inventory would mark that as New Old Stock and sell it at a discount. That is how I purchased my Peavey GV new for around half price back in 2002. Apparently the Holoflake Black (sparkle) finish was a hard sell... I like it.

For what it is worth, it is technically still new and likely still qualifies for full factory warranty from most manufacturers (though some cover from date of build instead of date of purchase to avoid instances like this). Also noting that factory warranties cover defects not abuse, just pointing out that with warranty typically means new to most people.

Have you asked if they have more in back? If they do, then it makes perfect sense to keep the demo on the floor getting bashed around instead of a nicer version.

If they don't have more in back, and you want it, have you offered a lower price? You can't get the discount you don't ask for.

One of my favorite pet peeves. A bass that is worn is used, even if it has never been sold.

If you want it at a fair price you need to haggle. Tell them its been on the wall for 5 years and you want the floor model price. Since it is a Breedlove bass I am sure the % of reduction won't be a lot, but shoot for a number say -8% and they may hit you with 10% then point out the dings and other ware and tear and they may go down a little good luck RTS

A bass in this condition listed as ‘new’ is license for the buyer to haggle. Any retailer in their right mind should just want to get the instrument out the door at that point. If they don’t budge, order one, maybe from a different retailer like a local business.

I bought an Ibanez SR505 new from my local store, I thought it had been on their site for a while but inspection date on the tag says 2014! It's unmarked though so I guess has just been acclimatising. Impressive that the Elixirs still sound bright...

I bought a Stingray a while ago from GC that had been damaged during shipping. Big chip in the finish near the control panel. I got them to do 15% off, but the first guy wasn't interested in discounting it. Second guy seemed like a manager and he offered me the markdown. The moral of the story is that it never hurts to ask.

I bought My car was brand new, but was the dealer's demo. There was absolutely nothing wrong with it other than having about 300km on the clock, and I got $7500 off the ticket price. If the guitar has actual visible damage and they're not prepared to drop a few bucks off the new price I'd ask them to get another one in.

Same here. In my region, last month the average sale price of a single detached home was $850,000.

If you do buy it - you need to be sure that the factory will still honor the warranty. Might give them a call My friend is selling some New Old Stock in his music store and there have been some issues with stuff that has been unsold for a long time.

If that bass is the only "new" one they have in stock, you should be able to get a demo price. $799 new seems about aright - I paid $400 for a used one (private transaction) a few years back.
