Since I've been playing out I've had a few people ask me how 'expensive' my stuff is. Honestly, I don't know how to answer without the risk of coming off as "over privileged". I'm kinda young for the stuff I own and don't like talking about how much it's worth. One guy asked me a couple days ago and of course I didn't want to lie but I also didn't want come out and say "this cost over a grand". It's not that I don't like talking about gear cause I do, that's why I'm here haha.

What do you do when people ask you how expensive your stuff is? Whether you own Fenders, Foderas, Squiers or whatever it may be.

Never been asked BUT, I've sort of had the weird opposite happen when I made the mistake of helping the drummer by carrying a gig bag full of cymbal stands and other hardware and he sort of freaked on me.

I carried it carefully out of the gig and into the parking lot where his car was and gently placed it down for him to actually load into his SUV. "Dude, don't put that down on the ground!! I like to keep my stuff pristine. You know how much that stuff costs? It costs $XXXXXXX!"

Last time I helped him out.

2 types of people do this question. Those they really like the stuff and want to know the cost just for having a reference (usually the price tells a lot about the quality)
and those that want to know just to make a conclusion about YOU and you bank account balance because they have nothing better to do than criticizing other people.

I have been asked this many times for everything I may own and what I return: "Why are you asking?"

My late father's view on the subject:

It's a hobby which almost pays for itself and, in the long run, is cheaper than vintage cars, motorcycles, boat, drugs, alcohol, and high-priced callgirls.

There seems that there's a growing number people who will look to shame you if you have anything of value. I doubt every person who asks the question has that motive, but there's a reason for everything. I can usually detect the intent of the question and for the most part, and typically give a true answer to the question. If Im not up for answering the question, I will answer the question with questions to them.. Answers: Did you want to know the value in U.S. Dollars?
Do you work for the IRS? The price before tax or after? I'm not sure about the price, but you can go through my receipts if it's important to you. After a few wise ass answers, the question usually becomes irrelevant.
