Maybe a Gold-Foil Precision for 2024 to go along with this.

Hope they do something weird like the Meteora Bass or Squier Rascal again. I have nothing against Fender doing a million different Ps and Js, but I think they're at their best in their mashup lines like Squier Paranormal or Fender Pawn Shop.

If Fender is serious about making a statement and creating some buzzz they would reissue the Kubicki Ex-Factor. I'm sure they strike a deal with the late great Phil Kubicki Estate.

Seriously, though, I actually like them, it's just too bad they screwed up on the headstock and finish options.

Vintera, Sonic, Paranormal, II, and other series nomenclature bugs me, but they’re too far down this road to stop now.

Doesn’t matter much to me. Just as I’m not seriously hoping for Snap-On to release a 3/8” ratchet with some special shape or paint on the handle, I count on Fender to always have an Olympic White with dark fingerboard Precision for me to buy, shield, toss on a wbwb guard, some kind of underwound pickup, string up, and use as a bass guitar.

It's Fender... not like it's going to be anything new or revolutionary. They laid off 3/4 of their custom shop staff, they don't really have the ability to do anything interesting anymore

Oh, and this year's Bold New Colors, and the amps have been re-tuned for stronger midrange performance. Rumble young man, Rumble.

Ya know, they’ve been known to use components from well known aftermarket companies in production models, I’m surprised that there isn’t a $850-1300 series of J & P made with the only real upgrade being Spitfire Tort guards. If they do it right with reliably good necks and matchy headstocks I’d be seriously into grabbing a Classic Custom King Ranch or Danny Trejo Signature.

Unless I’m mistaken they’re still making Kubicki basses build-to-order. You can certainly still get replacement parts from them.

But yeah, to me there was a peak in the mid-80s and early 90s, around the time FMIC was formed to buy Fender back from CBS, and it was partly influenced by what Fender Japan was doing. The Stu Hamm Urge bass was essentially a reshaped P-Bass Lyte, they brought Phil Kubicki on board, they later did those Jazz Bass Plus models, and on the guitar side, they revitalized the Strat with the Lace Sensors, new American Standard trem and the roller nut… and those cool Clapton finishes (7-up green, Coke red, pewter).

Lately they’ve been content to mashup / lightly remix the classics, or do limited versions with rare woods etc… because they’ve had issues coming up with “the next next Fender.” (I know some loved the Dimension bass, but they kinda whiffed on the body design.)

I have no problem with Yet Another Jazz Bass tbh, but they could just make one that feels “2024”.

• Slightly downsized
• Contoured / chamfered edges
• No pickguard
• Contoured heel with recessed bolts
• Start exploring eco-friendly wood alternatives - laminated phenolic birch, etc.
• Get expressive with finishes again - neons, sparkles, gradients, holoflake.
