Haha! I've flirted with the burp, but as soon as the lows start going I have to dial them back in. Just can't do it. I was honestly confused when I first heard the guy playing, because you really can't accidentally get to that sound and my brain was telling me something far, far different should have been coming out of his rig!
I always check out a bassists rig, guitarists too for that matter, especially when the tone is just killing it! I met a now very good friend at a gig once. We were doing a benefit and they went on before us. I was in a conversation with my old singer and in mid sentence I heard this guys tone and I had to go check out what he was playing thru.
Anyway, I struck up a conversation with him after his set and we've been real tight ever since.

I usually just go into the men's room and light the garbage can on fire. Then I go to the bar and order a drink while waiting for the alarms to go off. Then while everyone is panicking to get the hell out I casually stroll on over to the stage to do a bit of gear shopping.

I wouldn't either unless I'm about to setup on a multi band bill or something!! But I will literally talk to anybody about gear if they're not busy, still very rare IME that a bassist is *really* into gear though, that's why I'm on here alot

I always take a stroll up by the front of the stage to get a good look at the gear.
As a band member, the last band I was in was doing originals so we would do multiple-band shows. I would always ask the other band's members about their gear.
As an audience member, I might strike up a conversation if the musician is not busy packing up or if the person looks approachable.
I absolutely do this.
And it's funny, non-musicians often ask me "do you ever meet groupies or do women ever try to get your attention after shows?"
My answer is "No, as a bassist, the only people interested in me after a gig is another bassist asking me about my gear."

Absolutely, I'm often intrigued and curious as to how some guys sound great with minimal gear and others with a mountain of quality stuff sound not so good, and everything in between, so much to learn ! always checking out they're hardware and never judging what they have.
I love to talk gear and feel flattered when someone asks about mine and mentions my tone. I do have odd looking cabinets and that throws some folks, fEARful cabs that I covered in an aged tweed btw. I am always happy to talk about my baby a 65 Starfire. And yes I like to ask other players about gear as well but I rarely go out to clubs and almost never play on multi band bills.
I always eye it all up, but try not to gawk. I just love all those recipes. Really enjoy all the different orders that pedals are placed in the chain. If I ask a question, it is usually about a boutique or custom piece, but I only do that if it feels unobtrusive, the player's not busy, etc. Sometimes I do so as an ice breaker, to chat with a musician who's come all the way to our small town to play, if they are looking a little bored or uncomfortable or whatnot on break.

Always! I just love looking at and learning about gear. I'm not super knowledgeable myself, but love hearing what other people have to say. Then of course, there's some people who couldn't care less and have no desire to talk to you! Love those friendly folks.
Definitely! I check out gear at every gig. I'm too happy to talk gear with another bassist or aspiring bassist. I don't judge gear. As others have said, I've seen bands with mega $$$ setups sound like crap and can't play, and bands with pawn shop specials and combo amps just kill it!
