where can i try playing basses?

As above or any other music store. Make sure they have basses you want to try out in stock though- perhaps call them in advance.

Be upfront & honest with sales people--you are checking out what's available, seeing if it's something you like, etc.
If you don't intend to buy that day--let them know--but if you like what you try you'll be back, etc.

man, Atlanta Bass Gallery - I only live 1.5 hrs north and have wanted to visit but haven't yet

I always buy a set of strings whenever I go to a music store and I don't buy a bass or anything...just to compensate.
