I started about a year ago on my dad's crappy little 6x8 guitar amp, and my dad's real nice 1970 kimberly teisco made bass. For my 8th grade graduation a few months later, my dad bought me a 1x8 behringer thunderbird for my 8th grade graduation. I then bought my second bass, an aeb10 acoustic/electric, and I got a bxl900 behringer combo amp a few months ago(which i completely love) bass for life!
The summer of 1980, I was 16. My first bass was a used Cortez P bass copy with the ashtrays and a lipstick pup......
I ended up trading it in the winter of my Junior year of High School for a beautiful brand new Fiesta Red Peavey T 40 with the toaster pups.
I wish I still had them both!

i started playing guitar in 2004 when i was 15 years old. in 2005 i traded the guitar for a bass.

Early 80s, started really leaning bassward at 19, playing along with FM and records on EADG strings of a cheap nylon string guitar. I even 'converted' it by removing the treble strings and refiling the bridge and nut. Clearly it wasn't much, but I learned a lot before acquiring a used jazz copy.
I was 12 in 1980 and my dad bought me a old Kingston Bass with some old amp from a friend of his for me. I went to a teacher and he had me switch to guitar for his lessons and said I could play Bass later on in my life if I wanted. He was right, after playing either Bass or lead guitar in bands in the 80's and early 90's I made the full time switch to Bass in around 1998.
2001 with an Ibanez SR100 and a Peavey 400 Series, with a Peavey 2x15 cab. (Both Acquired the first year Peavey made Bass amps/cabs in which I enherited)
I started out about 5 years ago with an Ibanez SR506, 6 string bass. Insane as a 1st bass but still wanted to play Dream Theater so thought a 6er would be ok. Had that for a year plus and found that most music i played was mostly rock, metal, oldies and old school, didn't have much use for 6. Besides, it was tiring trying to hold a groove on a wide neck. Now i own 2 5ers and love playing the bass. Was playing guitars for about 8 years before that...somehow it lacked the feel and low end.
1991 or so, I was around 11. I asked my dad for a guitar and he bought me a Peavey Fury (P bass) and a TNT 115 combo. I played it until I was 18. When I turned 18 I bought an Ibanez SDGR 885 and I was happy with my 2 basses. Then in 2003 I found a website called "talkbass"............................
First I played the cello, than the jazz guitar. In 1997, when I was 27, my Dutch boss needed a bass player for one event per year, so first I played my guitar with an octaver. Next year my boss bought a Leon by Washburn jazzbass. For 9 years I played the bass once a year. I remember to practice one or two weeks before the gigs, and my hands were always in serious pain after it...
Anyway, in 2006 some Dutch musicians from that gig invited me to an international band to play the bass in an Egyptian tour. That was the day when I decided to become a real bass player. I went to the biggest store in Vienna and tried all the basses without watching their prices. I have choosen a Yamaha TRB 1005, probably because it had the best setup in the store, but of course the sound was very pleasent as well. In a few months I changed to fretless (Stringray), and this is the only bass, which I still have from the "beginning". In 2007, one month before the Cairo tour I started to play DB as well, which is a great tool to all bass players I believe to become even better!
Anyway, in 2006 some Dutch musicians from that gig invited me to an international band to play the bass in an Egyptian tour. That was the day when I decided to become a real bass player. - Full disclosure, I'm a certified Fender technician working in a music store that carries Fender, Yamaha, and Ibanez products among others.
I bought a Univox Ric copy with my birthday money in 1987, and plugged it into my stereo system with a series of adapters my dad had lying around.
It probably sounded awful, but I played it enough that it convinced my parents it wasn't a fad, leading to the family pitching in and getting me an Ibby SR400 and a '75 Fender Bassman 60 about a year later.

) from the age of 9 and played terrible Samick P-bass copies at school, but went to the US on my first overseas holiday aged 17 (1992) and bought a Washburn Status Series 1000 (4-string, full-bodied headless) with EMG J's (every other one I've seen had status J's on it, I assume the EMG's were after-market). I still own it (although it's on long-term loan to a friend), and it did a bunch of gigs and a huge number of church services before I got my ATK 305 which became my go-to.
Didn't own a bass amp until 2006 - always borrowed.
