Where do the pro's get their gear?

not quite sure how this relates to Recording Gear and Equipment.

I get your point about famous people/players and guitars/basses and perhaps amps, but I'm not sure how that works for recording gear. I suppose rich people can just hire studio design specialists to design, equip/buy and build a studio for them.

Multiple ways.

They might get free or discounted gear with an endorsement deal. Not necessarily the gear they prefer.

They might buy their own and get what the want. Perhaps they will go to the store themself or perhaps a store will send them a bunch of requested items to sample.

They might specify what they want on a tech rider, and it is provided by a backline or PA company.

There are probably gear finding services as well.

Years ago, I knew the manager of a small, independent instrument shop. He'd chat when not otherwise occupied. He told me that his shop would get calls from touring bands - sometimes the guitarist or bassist; sometimes the guitar tech or bass tech on the tour; sometimes the tour manager.

Always asking, "When do you close?" or "How late could you stay open?" the caller would either ask for particular gear or for particular repair work needed really soon; otherwise about gear or accessories that the caller would hunt for everywhere.

In recent years, I've been dealing with the owner of another small, independent instrument shop. He told me that he gets the very same types of call.

This guy also reports getting visits to his shop from touring musicians - sometimes big-name tock stars - simply because they have a few hours free and enjoy seeing what's available at shops like his.

Sometimes, he adds, he gets a call a few hours or a few days later offering a credit card number to purchase something found in the visit to his shop and asking about shipping either to the next tour stop or to the musician's home address.

Austin is a “guitar town” so it’s known for music shops, vintage guitar shops and a ton of luthiers. The guy I go to because I’m a menace with tools works on touring pros axes all the time.

Funny you should bring up Austin, I send my manager out to find mandolin strings in Austin at 4:00 in the morning. It's not all sex and drugs for him!
