OK I'm bored at work so here is a pre-emptive move thread...

i'm living in MI for a band right now...came up for an internship after school...but stayed for a band..been almost 3 years....basically the band is about to out grow MI..and can't tour.....long story short i may be moving in about a year.

My mom and sister live in Houston so I would like to be closer to them....though the thought of living in Houston makes me sick now :-)

within an 8 hour drive of houston the only place that seems cool to me is austin, tx

though i would like to be in a days drive of houston i'm also looking out one or two states....maybe NM, CO, AZ, FL, TN...maybe nashville or denver....

anyway i'm 27....some things i'm interested in..
relatively liberal town
a city with some "charm" or personality
decent music scene
decent job market
low humidity
nice nature or nature activities around
walking town
etc...

:help:

Chicago.

AWESOME town. Great music stores, House of Blues, all major concerts go through there, and PIZZA!!!

yeah cool town..but like i said...i'm trying to get a little closer to the family....maybe a days drive....or a 15 hour drive or so.....

chicago is only 4 hours from where i am now :-)

and i like new york style pizza better :smug:

Toronto!
Niagara Falls as well.

i LOVE toronto.....but see above

I'm gonna second Austin. My old guitar player moved there and he loves it.
Great scene. Probably the best place in the Lone Star State to live.

yeah it's def the fron runner...

i don't handle the humidity too well down there...i'm kinda a sweater...i thought something was wrong with me in houston....sweat just walking around at night...more than i would working out...then i moved somewhere that didn't have obscene humidity and realized it wasn't me.....

but it is cool and very close to home....

Well I've been thinking the same thing, getting tired of being here. Where to move? Looking for most of the same. Used to live in Houston too. Very hot and humid. Houston makes its own gravy! Austin would be great but I hear that there's really no gigs (or at least no good paying ones) b/c there are too many musicians. San Antonio wouldn't be too bad. I do like Dallas too.

But the no humidity sort of limits you. Denver would probably have the lowest humidity. Nashville would be cool (not temp wise). Las Vegas Baby!

Yeah, the humidity really sucks here, but you get used to it after a while. :help:

Austin seems like the only city for you, given your conditions. I'd also throw a nod to Denton, Texas...it's a neat little college town north of Dallas.

But I mean, it's pretty much a proven fact Texas is the greatest state in the nation. :bassist: :hiding:

well not no humidity just not a lot....some people tell me michigan is humid..not to me....i mean houston would get like 90% or something :hmm:

:

yeah i was kinda used to it...

but after living somewhere where during the summer it is 75..sunny..no humidity...i mean it's like freak'n heaven outside...eat, sleep, hang out all day long out there...amazing...

after that it would be hard to go back to the sauna :-)

huh as obvious as that sounds i never really thought of that......

what about for bass players? seems like there is a shortage of good bass players everywhere...

Austin -
.... " liberal " - yeah , i'd say so
.... charm , personality - meh , sorta
.... very decent music scene - yeah , definitely
.... decent job market - yeah , high tech stuff
.... low humidity - no better than S.A.
.... nature activities - yeah , i guess so
.... i don't know about a " walking town ",
but i'll just tell you that the traffic sucks ,
no matter where you live in Austin ,
north or south , east or west ...

I'm gonna second Austin. ...
Probably the best place in the Lone Star State to live.
... with the possible exception of S.A. having less traffic , and more community parks and such ...

San Antonio wouldn't be too bad.
San Antonio isn't too bad , but it aint all that great either ...
music scene kinda sucks , but the traffic isnt quite as bad as in Austin ...

just my opinion , ymmv .

peace,
dave

Other than the humidity thing, Portland is mighty nice.

Very liberal, very funky scene.

Weather is fantastic 6-8 months out of the year. From Oct-april, though, it's raining all the time. On the upside, summers are mild, and everything stays green.

Killer beer around here, too.
