Where to get a Chickenbacker Bass

I'd be happy to wager that the folks at Rickenbacker would strongly disagree with your "assessment."

That makes no sense.... if the consumer had the money for the real thing, I doubt they'd order from China.

Frankly I think the people at ric are a bunch of clowns overcharging for shotty, overpriced crap. Might as well buy from china, get the same thing.

Since morals are out the window on this site. I just robbed my neighbor anybody want a cheap TV?

Now your neighbor has to buy a new TV, thus bringing valuable dollars to the TV manufacturer and strengthening the economy. You have done a good service. Besides, you weren't really going to buy a TV anyway, so you didn't really hurt anyone. And since your neighbor's TV is probably crap, you'll probably yearn for a better, new TV. So you'll go out and buy one. Again, bringing valuable dollars to the TV manufacturer and strengthening the economy. Everybody wins!

And your neighbor, being foolish enough to allow you to steal his TV, is obviously a weaker member of the herd. Best he be taken advantage of to strengthen the species.

(Sounds like some people on this forum, who hopefully aren't attorneys and certainly were never in the debate club...)

I just wish that Rickenbacker would start their own offshore line at an affordable price point, like a mim Fender type if thing. Just simply call them Ric. Bolt on, mono and cheaper electronics for around $700, I would buy one in turn giving Rickenbacker some of my money, maybe not as much as on the real deal, but right now they are not getting any because I can't afford one

Speaking of attorneys, it's up to them to determine what is and is not an infringement of copyright, not forum cowboys on whom the irony of their own choice of avatar is lost.

Until there is an official word from the US and/or Chinese government on this issue, the items in question are perfectly legal, regardless of individual opinions on the subject, "moral highground" or not.

The Martin D45 at US$400 looks a pretty good deal until you read the specs and the body is made of basswood. No doubt similar with the Rick. I would be more concerned with some unscrupulous person bringing one in then onselling it to some unsuspecting innocent as the real thing.

If you aren't aware there is already "official word" on this particular topic, then you have no concept of international trademark and intellectual property law; avatars, cowboys, and whatever other nonsense you want to throw in the mix aside.

I'm in China now.

Went to Xin Jie Kou street, the music instrument section of Beijing. The most impressive place was Heng Yung. Plenty of Squires and Mexi's but no USA fakers or Chickenbackers at all. The sell those online from Alibaba or dhgate. I visited around 20 shops side by fkn side and there was way more headroom left before we gave up. It really was the same store over and over and that was just on one side of the street mind you. They have two lines from Indonesia called Carlos and Hernandez that are nice. I also saw a Yamaha Attitude (not really) neck on a P body signed by Billy himself. (um-hmm) Anyways, Taylors, Les Pauls, Strats, P's, J's all for around 3100 yuan (500 bux). The geetars are super fkn light and the basses are super fkn heavy. The Warwicks played and sounded fantastic. Nothing else did. At all. They all had high action, frets needed to be dressed, some had scratchy pots, all the tuners were in reverse(thats strange) one had a volume knob that didn't go all the way silent. (is that legal?) that was a joke.

I'm going to the SMZB CD release party tonight at a place called School and going to a Jazz Jam tuesday (free draught) and a blues jam Thursday @ Salud hosted by a Chinese harmonica player, Zhen Ren, an Englishman and an Irishman. I've heard this joke before.

I bought an SX P bass for 800 yuan (just under 130 bux) and he threw in a clip tuner, an 1/8th" to 1/4" adapter(saw it layin there and needed it for my Korg ToneWorks) a strap and the absolute cheapest gig bag I have ever seen. I had never heard of SX but it looks good, frets are clean, has very low action all the way past the 12th fret and who gives a ship what the pickups sound like the places I'm playin pay in beer that tastes like Old Milwaukee. But it is free and the jams are just for funseeze.

I'm giving it all to my wife's nephew, who is a percussionist, when we leave next month but I'm keeping the adapter and probably the tuner as well.

We will burn the gig bag and hope it finds a better life in the next or on the other side.

No Facebook in China, No Sprint service either but I can get on Talkbass and isn't that what matters most?

This is a false dichotomy. It's not good for rickenbacker. However, We are saying that no tb'r in their right mind would buy these if they were in any way a marketable customer for rickenbacker. Therefore it isn't hurting their bottom line as far as these specific purchasing habits are what is being discussed. If these were sold to the unsuspecting as a ric then I'd be right there with you. If these were being sold in the used market as a ric in this specific instance I'd be right there with you. However there's no reason to suspect that a body shape copy cat should be hounded from being discussed like this. I don't believe that there would be any complaints if someone was asking for help finding a precision bass look alike. The shape is iconic but most of these people just seem to be interested in the aesthetic of the shape. Legality does not always equal mortality. Illegality does not always equal immorality.
Ah, so Chinese counterfeit Rickenbackers are actually good for Rickenbacker's business. Makes perfect sense to me! :rollno:

Governments have spoken officially on this issue repeatedly, the counterfeiters continue to ignore them until caught. The items in question are not "perfectly legal", at least not in the US. It's not even a moral question at this point, the law and the courts and the governments have spoken on this issue repeatedly and have been very clear. Seems to me you're the one taking the "wild west" cowboy attitude on this one.

Not everyone on this forum is American or cares if American companies increase their profit margins.
Sure, but you ought to care, whatever the country, if true craftsmen are being ripped off and the value of their products diminished by counterfeiters. Everyone should. It's not a country bias thing at all.

Musicmanbassguy,
As predicted, the diatribes and posturing emerge. As an adult with free will, make your own choices. When it comes to copyright infringement, there are no sinless posters on this or any other forum entitled to "cast the first stone" at you, though they will line up in droves to do so anyway. Whatever you decide, be aware that Aliexpress and Alibaba are sketchy at best. Your money can vanish with little or no recourse. Pitbull is by all accounts a reputable company, and does not make instruments with fake logos. As far as I know, they legally ship lots of kit copies to the states, and you will find plenty of TB threads from people who have bought them.

Agreed. The thread wasn't created to discuss the merits of the sound or build quality, but to ask directly where a counterfeit bass could be obtained. It's beyond me how the TB forum can allow such a thread to remain on the board. For goodness' sake, earlier today a thread was banned which simply asked users to nominate ugly basses. That's not allowed, but the promotion of illegal fakes is OK? I think it's time for those who manage the TB forum to have a serious look at this.

Hooray for common sense. I call for the mods to act.
