Is "greatness" in music or any art form purely subjective? Personally, I don't think so.

It's hard to define greatness in this context, but it is possible to identify some of the qualities that a lot of "great" music often has. These would include being innovative and imaginative, demonstrating a profound understanding of musical concepts and a mastery of technique. Any musician can recognise these qualities when they hear them, even in music that does not appeal to their own personal tastes.

There is no doubt that the music Jaco played demonstrated all of these qualities and more. This is what I meant when I said his music transcends opinion. What he played was what he played. Whether you enjoy listening to all of it, some of it or none at all doesn't change the fact that those qualities are all there.

I totally disagree. I watched a bunch of Jaco on Youtube over the weekend. I cannot stand much of any of it. Not easy to listen too and nearly impossible to understand why anyone would like it............I don't hear anything innovative, or imaginative, I hear chaos and lame patterns of harmonics that do nothing musically. Now, to people who are into it, then it is that for them........to me it is not..........you continue to "push" Jaco on the folks that don't like it............not sure why it's so important that EVERYONE gets it for you, but I assure you, some of us don't get it..........again, glad you are passionate, I bet that comes through in all other parts of your life and I bet you are a cool human being!! I love people who are true to themselves and what they love............just don't push it on others.....

That's a lovely version. He captures that 3/4 swing of the original really nicely in places. Thanks for the link.

I'm going to spend an hour or two at the piano this evening having a go at this tune. It would make a great party piece. My version won't come out like that one, though.
