Wheres the Phaser talk people??!?!

A phaser will most likely be my next pedal, probably the Boss PH-3 just go to with the rest of my board (5/7ths Boss) or maybe the MXR considering I'll be going for a Pink Floyd sound. Are there big differences between the Phase 90 and the Phase 100?

I have never found a definitive answer for that last question. I've heard that the 100 is a little more subtle than the 90, but as I have yet to actually FIND a Phase 100 in a brick-and-mortar store to test, I can neither agree nor disagree. I am, however, getting one in a few days, having just traded my Script Phase 90 Reissue w/LED, which is basically the 'Script' button on the EVH Phase 90. That pedal, by the way, is quite good, despite looking ridiculous. Anyway, I'll give my report on the Phase 100 after I receive it next week.

As for the Boss PH-3, I actually kind of like it. It's digital, if that matters to you, and it doesn't have the same impact as, say, a 1974 Phase 90, or a Maestro Phase Shifter, but it is an all-around good pedal, built well, uses the standard Boss power supply, and is, most importantly, easy to find and demo.

The Phase 100 has a significantly different sound than the Phase 90. It is marketed as a 10 stage phaser, but it sounds much more like a six stage phaser to me. I've heard that 4 of the 10 stages are "fixed" so that might explain why it has a six stage sound, but I'm not clear on the terminology there.

In any event, I'd say the two have a different basic tone. I wouldn't characterize the 100 as more subtle. I'd say it's more lush if anything, and more versatile as well. But I'm a fan of 6 stage phasers more than 4 stagers on bass so take my comments with a grain of salt.

As far as I remember (I could easily be wrong) the phase 90 is a 4 stage phaser whereas the phase 100 is an 8 stage phaser.

The phase 100 has an additional selector (4 way-again from hazy memory here) which gives some variance in the wave shape of the sweep and its intensity, but over all being an 8 stage, the sound is less 'vintagey' and cleaner and clearer (to my ears!) than that of a 4 stage. IMHO etc etc etc....

Whirlwind's Orange Box is an awesome phaser and fits perfectly for bass. It's a tad more subtle than the new MXR block 90s but that's just the way I like it.

As some have already stated, a phaser can easily get you lost in the mix but it's awesome when there aren't that many other instruments drowning you. My inspiration for buying one came from hearing one three piece band (guitar, bass and drums) playing some awesome psychedelic rock. The bassist literally swoop the whole room with the phaser when the guitarist noodled around.

I have a Black Russian Smallstone and a modded Phase 90 which between them do the the trick nicely for me. Would love to try out a Whetstone and/or get my hands on a Whirlwind or old Script 90 but I'm content as is for now.

Yep - and to great effect.
...provided the gat player doesn't hit their swoop pedal at the same time.;)

The Q. Deluxe looks great, really keen to try one out, but the way they seem to sell so quickly I don't think I'll ever get to try before I buy it online....

Another question; What makes the most INTENSE phase tones you've ever heard?

Hard to explain tone in words and people have different meanings attached to intense. For instance, the DOD 490 is what I'd call the "thickest" phaser I've used, but I think you're talking about what I'd call the "deepest" phaser sound.

I've tried a number that are deep sounding but I might give the nod to the old Maestro Stage Phaser. This hefty guy:

The Moog would be in that race too, and it's a pedalboard space eater itself.

Phasers are cool, for me right between the "it plays itself" chorus and the "you need to be really careful here" flanger. The more I use my SIB! Mr. Fazeadelic, the more I like it. The Depth and Feedback controls work well together and switchable speeds are great - I like to switch to fast when my filter is engaged. I'd still like to try the HBE which is reasonably priced!

I have been wanting to try out the Digitech Hardwire Phaser...relatively new. I now have 2 Hardwire pedals on my board and I hate to stick with the same maker of pedals usually but they sound really good. The delay is awesome and their chorus pedal is aweome. Tons of tonal possibilities out of them...so the phaser is probably similar...and you can choose between the 'stages' on the Phaser.

Yeah I had a look at the moog too - but the sheer size of it put me off. I do love how the moogs have all the expression options tho.... thats a definite plus.

BTW - Where's the on/off/bypass on that maestro? Am I missing something?

I've been playing with my new MXR Phase 100 for the past two days, and I have to say that, while rather subtle, it is quite a lot of fun. The phase sounds were not what I had expected, and they are distinctly different from those of my now-departed Phase 90 w/LED. If there were a way to make the effect a lot louder, I'd be happier with the effect, but it is otherwise enjoyable. It's different enough from the Pigtronix EP-2 to warrant its own place on the Pedaltrain. Of course, it doesn't have any Velcro on the bottom, but that's something I can remedy tomorrow afternoon.

Just got the Source Audio tri mod phaser. Havent been able to try it out through my actual rig yet. Sounds pretty good through the studio monitors, but I've learned that isn't a guarantee for live real bass amp situations. Will get to try her out for real next week.

What can anyone tell me about the A/DA Final Phase? I'm not going to buy it anytime soon, but, based on all of my ridiculous posts and claims, I'm probably going to end up with it by the end of 2012.

I'm kinda the same with the Quasar deluxe.
Don't need it - but hell it has some awesome features.

RE: the A/DA - I'd wanna hear that OD in person with my main axe before I even considered it.
