Which bass for a power trio?

The Ray! Duh. It's more powerful, 3X more punchy for power pop. The Jazz is cool too. But not quite as gutsy as the Ray. I love a P bass but to stand out and fill space with just a 3 pc. it is a no brainer. I also have all 3 of these options. I might bring that P to the studio, use the Jazz in the video and slam the Ray on stage.

Those are three really good choices. I sing and play in a power trio and originally when I wrote the songs and started this band I thought the P bass would be my go to since I love Nomeansno and wanted a similar tone but play fingerstyle. Once the band got going, the Jazz bass ended as my main bass. It just fit so well. The music is a mixture of punk, prog, funk, metal and jazz. It's kinda like Primus, Nomeansno, Mike Watt stuff and Mike Patton stuff too.
I've been curious about a Stingray. I'm thinking about picking up one of the Sterling by MM models to see how it works.
Also with the Jazz, you have 3 really good pickup tones. I usually keep mine full on but there are songs where I use the front for a P like tone and rear for that Jaco type tone.

Green Day was still a power trio in the 90’s, Mike uses a P Bass. Mark Hoppus of Blink 182 has a reverse P Pickup in his Jazz Bass. Both were fairly successful and influential in that genre/era.

Rancid was initially a power trio and Matt Freeman also uses a P.

Any will work. If you currently feel more comfortable on one, bring that. All else equal, I'd bring the Ray for the sound.

The Ray for 90’s vibe, but if you play with a pick the P can sound even bigger. Any will work fine though. Definitely bring a overdrive pedal!
