Which bass is which? A comparison.

Which clip sounds best?

So the votes are showing an almost even split between the two most opposite basses. The Clip #1 bass, the Reverend and the Clip #3 bass the Dingwall.

So that leads me to believe that some folks like that old school thump and some folks like modern hifi.

Sort of makes me wonder what the Dingwall would sound like with flats. Hummm....

Number 2 sounds best to me. I’ve got no clue which one is which, but they all sounded good.
Number 3 had a very slightly harsh sound in the highs, which made it my least favorite of the three, but it still sounded really nice.
Number 1 sounded almost exactly to same as Number 2 to me, but I’d say it’s lacking something small. Don’t know how to describe it, but it seems like 2 was everything 1 was, and then some.

They all sounded very similar. To the point that I’d almost say that they were the same bass and you’re tricking us. Maybe the reason they sounded slightly different was a result of differing amounts of pressure used while playing.

Maybe I’m just completely wrong.

Pretty spot on, but they were indeed different basses.

#1 - Reverend
#2 - Curcio
#3 - Dingwall

I recently added a couple of new basses to the stable and my wife asked the question, "Why do you need different basses?". Well DUH...they all sound different and are used for different things. Shees...non-musicians ask the stupidest questions.

So...I decided to run through my arsenal and record a clip with each one. Can you guys guess which bass is which? Then declare a winner of best sounding bass of the three.

Here's the contenders:

Match the clip to the correct bass and vote for which clip sounds best.
I voted #3 clip. Are the clips in the same order as bass’s? Because, to me clip #3 sounds like a Reverend.
Have you revealed? I will read thread to see if you already did.

Yep...I revealed after someone guessed correctly.

The Reverend is #1. Sort of tell tale with the flats on it. It's really not that dark, but those flats give it that old school "thump".

#3 is the Dingwall.

I've never played a Zon. I hear good things though.
I've owned two of them. Like anything else - it all comes down to your personal liking. For me, they were the best. No adjustments to make in the neck - always rock solid. The other thing that made me feel good about my purchases was what a nice guy Joe Zon is. He'll go out of his way, above & beyond for any customer. Doesn't matter whether you are famous or just a joe-blow bassist (like myself). He'll stay on the phone with you as long as it takes to get your questions answered. I know some people don't care about that aspect of the bass guitar company - but to me it's important. Like the opposite of Joe Zon would be Ken Smith. I called him once and I (literally) got screamed at on the phone and then hung up on. So even if Ken Smith were the best basses in the world - I'd never give that guy one cent of mine. If you get a chance, check out the Zon's. I had a Sonus 5 string and a Sonus Special 4 :)

The guy who is building a bass for me now is a great guy. I don’t have to call him, he lives 8 miles from me. I just go see him.

I don't hear a huge or significant difference between them honestly, but I liked the 3rd clip the best mostly because i feel that the bass tone is the least obtrusive. To me it just fit the best with the rest of the tones in the song.

Thanks for responding. The majority agree that #3 (the Dingwall) is the best sounding. It is the most full range, modern sounding bass I own.
