Which Bassist "Made" a Band?

I’ll respectfully disagree.

We feel that way because we’re bassists. 99% of Rancid’s fans, pogoing in the pit, had no idea who was on bass, and it’s doubtful they’d have noticed if someone subbed.

Not so for the vocalist. Flea? Maybe. But more people followed that band for Kiedis than for Flea.

Evidently you aren’t familiar with Rancid if you’re under the impression that most of their fans didn’t know the bass player’s name and scream for him to play the bass solo on Maxwell Murder at every show ;)

The question wasn’t “do more people know the vocalist than the bass player?” either, it was “what bands were ‘made’ by the bass player?”

The Chili Peppers are undeniably in that catagory, as is Rancid: can you even name another punk band with a bass solo?

I don’t think he plays a bass solo, but I’ll fight anyone who claims Klaus Flouride wasn’t absolutely essential to the Dead Kennedys. I’ll probably lose, but I’ll fight them anyway. Klaus is/was the man.

True story. I’d argue he made that band in a similar way, though maybe not as famously as Freeman.

I think the OP is implying these are major bands in which the bassist is the main guy. Indispensable.

Sorry, no. Unless the bassist also sings or songwrites.

Anyway. ‘Night.

“Indespensible” and “main guy” are not mutually exclusive.

The bassists I mentioned all write for their respective bands as well ;)

Again, Flea (In order to exclude the bassist/lead singer factor)

Aside from the fact that he is one of the main songwriters in the band, an overwhelming amount of the songs revolve around his bass playing. He also is, without a doubt, the band member with the most stage presence (even more than Anthony Kiedis).
