Based on the poll I think I'll go with the 4x10 and 1x15. Now if you all could be so kind to suggest what brand of cabs to get. Keep in mind that I am a college student on a budget of about $1000 400 of which is taken by the power/pre amp.
Thanks all.

The best possible choice is that great great brand: USED! :D
It is the only way you can get 2 good cabs for $600.

BTW, I got a killer SWR 4x10 goliath II for ~$240 used in good condition.
I bought my 1x15 (SWR son of bertha) on sale for about $490.

You might consider getting 2x10 + 1x15 first, and then when your power
amp and budget allow, get a top line 4x10 (or other) cab. A 2x10 is
very useful for smaller gigs, rehearsals, etc. Good luck.

+1

I got my 2 Avatar cab's from a local guy I had them for sale on ebay, he did not really want to ship and he was moving out of state and did not want to take them. I got both cab's for $260 cash and carry! Mint condition, non smoker... never pushed nor gigged. :hiding:

FYI, I would check your local craig's list and ebay if you cant find good deals on talkbass or if you don't want to pay shipping on larger cab's. Just a thought!

Best of luck,

On a budget, I would look at a single 4x10 and later add the second cab as needed. You may find the single 4x10 to be adequate, then again, maybe not. A single GOOD 4x10 will be a heck of alot more productive than two crappy cabs.
If I go that route what would you suggest?

Nobody has said anything about the two cabs I found on ebay. Why?

I'd recommend two identical cabs with nothing bigger than a 15" speaker. For 3 reasons:
1. Bi-amping with most bass heads on the market today is a tricky thing and often results in a 'scooped' midrange or a spot in the freqency respose that 'dips' a little. If you run two different cabs in "Dual mono" (sending the same signal to each) it's often hard to E.Q. both cabs to your ideal tone.
2. Most manufacturers make cabs today that really are "full range"- at least for the purposes of electric bass even with extended tunings. Not so long ago many players needed to add a fifteen or eighteen to their 4x10 cabs because small speakers just couldn't produce the lows. Now-a-days many 2x10 cabs will go down to 30-40 hertz. Unless you are running something that sounds like a ride cymbal through your rig and need to add a super-tweeter...
3. Adding a cab that produces large amounts of sub-bass (below 70 hz like an 18" speaker) really isn't necessary if you are playing in venues that have an adequate PA and competent sound engineer. If fact, I'd say that it makes enineering harder because all that low end will seep into every mic on stage. Besides- unless you play standing 20 or 30 feet away from your speakers, you won't actually hear the lows the same way the audience does. I say let the sound engineer do their job and use the 20,000 watt PA with the massive subs make you sound huge. It's Ok to be loud enough on stage to hear your articulation and punch and tone but let the PA throw your deepest tones to the back of the room. You might even find that you hear yourself more clearly or that your amp has more headroom this way.
Anyway I use 2 Epifani 3x10 cabs for outdoor gigs or LARGE indoor venues, but 90% of the time I only use 1 Epifani 3x10UL.
Put enough power behind it and it cuts through anything.
Good luck!

Oh, forgot to say- budget wise: you can get a used epfani 3x10NYC (heavy but sound great) for under $600 easy. I paid about $425 for mine. Pick up a used Epfani 4x10 and you'll sound great in all but the biggest venues. I've used edens and they can be even louder, but not as smooth. That part really is up to your tastes. Aguilar has a great sound for rock. And like I said- try to let the PA do some of the work...at least until you can afford two cabs.

For me I use a Carvin 1,000 head bi-amped with 1-18 and a 4-10. I noticed that this was the least used combination in the poll. But for me and my 5-strings, this is the only way to go. Along with those tens for clarity, to get the biggest, deepest low end you need an 18. But do not ever play that 18 as a full range by itself because they SUCK at high end. But along with the tens to cover the mids/highs, the 18 really outdoes the 15 on the lows.

I voted other.....I have used 2x10 with horn and a 1x18 for 25 years, sometimes 2 cabs, sometimes 4 cabs depending on the venue. I have found this to be a great general set-up for what I used to do, which was play Metal, and Jazz. I could get all the response I needed across the spectrum, and if the cabs are tuned well, it just sounds AWSOME!

Has anyone ever used these? I know a group who is endorsed by Madison Speakers and they love em. My power and pre amp are going to be used probably.

Can somebody please give me thier opinion on these two cabs. They are chaep which is a good thing for me and they have Madison Speakers in them. I know a band that is sponsered by Madison Speakers and they love them. Thats another incentive for me. Before I do anything I want to get some other opinions from my fellow TB'ers.
