I play with my thumb sometimes but mostly with a pick (a Phat Tone by Clayton which is less clicky than a regular pick) and I love the Stax, Motown, Muscle Shoals bass vibe. I used to use GHS Precision flats but they are on backorder for the Medium scale set so what are my other options for that thumpy tone in what would probably be a Medium scale set? I know I don't like Chromes and I'm skeptical of LaBellas based on past experience. Any other options - Legends, Fender.......

Which flats on a Squier Mustang string thru the body?

What kind of experience have you had with the La Bella? They do offer a set specifically designed for the thru-body Mustang, ie 760F-MUS (43-104).
Dunlop Flats, which get plenty of positive reviews around here, are not quite as "old school" as either the La Bella or the GHS, but they do come in "medium scale" with 34" winding length (ball end to silk).
If you want to try the DR Legends, the "short scale" set should be long enough as they're 33.75" in winding length, which is most other companies' "medium scale".
@michael_t I never could get the LaBellas to break in and get past that treble vibe with a pick. The GHS strings are good right out of the package. GHS Customer service emailed me that I should use the medium gauge but of course they are on backorder everywhere.
Based on my experiences with the two brands mentioned, I tend to agree about the GHS being "warmer and woodier" overall.
I have no personal experience with either the Dunlop or the DR, but if I were in your position, I would probably try the Dunlop first.
I went ahead and ordered the DR Legends after listening to several videos, and reading some reviews including "The Bass Whisperer". I'm hoping to use this bass for old school RnB tones and my Gretsch Junior Jet II for my rock and Americana needs. I swapped the .047 tone capacitor for a .1 orange cap and the tone pot seems really responsive now on this Mustang so hopefully I can add any clarity I need!
If you don't mind shelling out the money, you really can't go wrong with TI Jazz Flats. They last forever, so while they are very expensive compared to other strings it's entirely possible that you'll never need to replace them.
Well I received the DR Legends and I love them. Perfect fit, nice tone and tension, feel great and no floppy E string plus no clacking on the frets or string noise either.
