FWIW, I have the Broughton mentioned in the op, and it does exactly what it’s supposed to do. Solid pedal. Nothing exciting, but it’s not supposed to beI’m looking at adding HPF/LPF to my board. The two I’m considering are the SFX Sound Thumpinator and Broughton Low + High filter pedal. In your opinion, which of these two provides the best performance?
What other options are out there?
I think a lot of people imagine it “tightening up” a muddy low end, but it’s been my experience that those people just need to dial out some mud in the low mids on their eq.
I will say that a circuit I use a LOT is an HPF I made early on, which accidentally had some resonance at the corner frequency due to a gain ‘mistake.’ The combination of a little bump in the lows, followed by a steep falloff is a fantastic old-school fat-but-not-too-deep sound.In my experience, both are true. It does clean up a lot of low end rumble, particularly with a rig that produces a lot of content below 40hz (for example) and/or with an amp that doesn't have a built in HPF, which many or most current offerings do.
AND
A lot of peoples trouble is as much in low mid voicing as it is in sub bass rumble.
For me, adding an HPF let me push more "usable" low end, resulting a fatter, tighter, more satisfying sound without much or really any loss of perceived depth, when heard in a mix on stage.
To clarify, as the HPF is rolled upwards, the slope smoothly changed from 24dB/octave to 12dB/octave. It’s not an either-or situation.… And, the Genzler Re/Q has a fixed filter at 25hz plus the variable HPF, so it does 12+12 below 25hz.
