Which is Better Precision or Jazz bass (Pros and Cons)

I wish there was some way I could block certain categories of thread. P vs. J would be on my ignore list for sure. Yeah, of course I can just overlook them and I usually do, but it would be nice if they would just not even show up in the thread listing.

I like the way a jazz bass feels. I have small hands so the slimmer neck is better for me. Ialso feel as though the jazz body is more comfortable.

Another option for you would be a PJ bass then you could have the best of both worlds, or as someone else mentioned is to have both.

As far as the hum is concerned shielding the control cavity might help or else splurge and buy a high end P or J bass like a Mike Lull or Sadowsky. I have both and neither if them hum.

There are countless P vs j threads, and each one has a few posters suggesting getting a P/J because it is 'the best of both worlds'. It's not. It's a P with a J bridge PUP added, more or less balanced between them.

If you like a J primarily for the neck PUP, like me, it is no solution. (I play my Js with a bit of bridge or both PUPs wide open, and never with the bridge full up and neck rolled off)

Many, like myself, don't particularly like the sound of a J bridge PUP blended with the P one, so it might not even offer any advantage over a P for them. Sometimes more is less.

This is something that rarely gets mentioned, and might help the future multitudes who will read this thread when linked to the next identical thread, along with every other past one, which I'm sure they will...

I seem to remember reading that one bass was better for lefties and the other was better for righties, or was it the other way round ?? I can't remember. I think that the one which wasn't quite as bad as the other wasn't necessarily a better bass, but it could have been and indeed it was... I think.

when I ever I solo pickup there is a little bit of hum and
sometimes when I'm playing my bass near electronics there is a really loud humming noise which forces my to put both pickups at full volume.

That humming is because of the design of a single coil pickups. You need to have both full on for them to "cancel each other out". You can however, get hum-canceling pickups. :bassist:

+1

I don't like the P/J sound either. My experience with it that it was muddier than a single P pup.
You hit the issue right on: "Sometimes more is less".
(This is just opinion off course.)

As for P-bass vs. J-bass: they're both traditional basses who cover each a different range of tone.

In a fretted bass I like P pup, not in particular a P-bass, I like something sleaker. (An active humbucker in bridge position is also something I prefer.)

J-bass: I only prefer a fretless one. But 2 J pups I only like for softer kinds of music (jazz). I like to use the bridge pup at 100% and the neck pup at 80% (and fingerstyle playing close to the neck).
I like the feel of the body on a Jazz more than a Precision.
My ideal fretless on the other hand is with P-style pickups (for the harder music genres).

I want a precision bass (Squier Affinity or VM) pure for nostalgic reasons. (It was my first bass and I learned a lot on it, did many gigs with a P.)
But a precision bass will never be my main bass again. It's nice to have in a bass collection (if you want a collection that is.)
