Which J Bridge pickup with SPB3 on neck position?

I agree that a hum-cancelling J is a good idea in a PJ bass.

I have a Warmoth PJ with SD SPB-1 and SD STK-J2 in bridge position. The Warmoth J routing is closer to the neck than usual 60s or 70s bridge pickup location, so it sounds somewhat fuller.

Unlike some, I normally use the J full volume, and add P pickup as desired with good results. P pickup emphasized sounds good as well.

I use 500k volume pots and Fender TBX tone control (V-V-T).

Sounds like the Dimarzio Area J is a good for hum-cancelling bridge pickup, especially if the P is hot or will be emphasized.

Same reason I always used the Hot Stack. Sounds great with the SPB-3.

got clips? that's my 2nd option too, but people say that 'stacks' have much lower output than splits like the Ultra.

Wow, great info guys. Thank you for helping me understand Hum canceling.

I'm thinking it would be awesome to do a P/J setup with two single coils in the bridge right next to each other 'Oakley tractor bass style. Just hard wire them together in hum canceling configuration to keep things simple.

So I guess the only advantage of that setup over a single hum bucking J in the bridge would be esthetics. It would look rad having two J's slammed right next to each other.

Perhaps another advantage of having tractor bass J placement would be having a pickup in both the 70's j placement closer to the bridge and one in the more modern, closer to neck position to grab more tonal ranges from the strings.

Does that make sense? What do you guys think if this idea for a fun project?

From experience, No.
My P/J has both SD q/lb's in it, with 250k pots for V/T and a 4 way Tele switch for "Series/P/parallel/J". I have shielded all the cavities with foil tape, shielded the drilled wire runs with brass tube and soldered it all together and grounded to the jack.
Most of the time it's totally quiet, but I have been in some situations where I needed to solo the P to avoid hum. The problem seemed to be caused by neon beer signs on stage and compact fluorescent basement lights. Though I have played around neon with no problems in some bars. ???

I'm also looking for a split coil Jazz to replace the QP. Wonder how the Ultra Jazz would match up?

can be done, but for me it's just technically a humbucker on the bridge position, and it looks awkward.

it's a matter of personal taste.

Yeah, I think it could be pretty darn cool and unique. Only downside would be the little bit of extra weight of an extra pup and expense.
