Which Jazz Bass for AlternativeRock/Ambient/Post-Rock

Hi,

Which Fender, do you think is better in genres like alternative rock or ambient / Post Rock music?
I almost only play with pick (70%) and fingers (30%), so which one is the better one for that?

I have the chance to buy an American Vintage 75' Jazz Bass used for 1200 Euros. (I absolutely love the look of that bass)

I can also get the New American Jazzbass new for 1200 Euros.

I also heard that the sound of the AV '75 is kind of thin. Is that true? And I heard that it's kind of a slapmonster - but I don't really like slapping and I only play the techniques like I described above. I looked it up in youtube and there are only slap samples and that makes kind of scared to accidentally awesome slapbass wich is not that good with the genres i like.



So this decision is kind of hard for me because it's quite a lot money and I'm not able to test them before buying..

I own an AV 75 RI. When i play with a pick and want it thick i back the bridge pick up off half way and cut the tone half way and I find it very thick in a P bass kind of way. I don't play slap either and have it strung with flats - it really is a great bass. Weather the it is worth the extra $$$ vs and MIA is a matter of opinion. I love gloss finished necks and maple boards so for me it is worth it.

Well the AV 75 RI is better deal and a better bass IMO and better PUs. And remember that the 75 RI is CAPABLE of being a slap monster. That doesnt mean that thats all it can do. It is going to be a much brighter tone though. But like mlove said, roll off the back pu and tone knob, slap on some flats. I personally love ash maple jazzes.

I do not know how old you are. I'm not young, but not really old..... but I had exact the same thought as you: I've no idea what post-rock is!! Is there pre-rock as well? What about post-pop? I mean, everything later than the 80's should be post-pop....

Anyway, I think any good Jazz will do, not only this 2.

Check out Mogwai, Explosions in the sky, Pelican, Godspeed you black emperor, etc...
If you get into the post metal stuff your talking Neurosis and Isis which are just awsome
Post rock seems to be mostly instrumental but there is lots of great stuff in it. It rewards the patient listener.

***? Why not get the one that makes you sound the best? See which one sounds best through your rig. A good setup on each bass is half the battle. Too me if both basses are setup differently it'd be like comparing apples to oranges even though they are both J. Sorry for being an ass but I couldn't resist the opening remark.
Sorry didn't know you can't test them. Go with the looks. Your mind will be more at ease for spending that much money.

Does your band sound like a cross between Brian Eno and Fugazi, with a little bit of Minus the Bear or EITS thrown in?

Interesting combination of genres.

I don't really have an opinion of which jazz to get, I just dig the combination of genres.

Ambient is Eno for sure. What I didnt know was that 70's TV theme master Mike Post had a project going with Kid Rock? The 75 RI unless you like satin necks and graphite rods.
