If I did go tobacco/tort I asked Nino for a significantly darker pau ferro board than the one shown but tinted maple is certainly a great option too.

Blueburst and Trans Brown are still running neck and neck with tobacco burst still within striking distance.

The thing with antigua is that you could show up with a tobacco/tort P-bass and it wouldn't cause a stir but most everyone would accept it right away. Antigua? I think you'd get much more reaction, good and bad.

Yeah, and I totally get that. But my school of thought is that, it's supposed to be the classic P-bass and the most normal bass in my stable so why not go with a very standard look. But then again, the sound is what I want and if I can get that with a sweet modern looking blueburst and maple, why not?

Or a nice compromise with a trans brown and tinted maple that has an old school vibe but isn't as cliche as the tobacco burst.

As you can tell, I've gone round and round with this before coming to TB for help deciding. ;)

Good choice going with Nino, good luck with it. I like the idea of an ash/maple P bass, it's allot easier to dial the aggressiveness out then try to add it in to a Alder/RW.

Of course that's just my opinion... I also like the translucent brown, which is sometimes called rootbeer!

I'd personally go with tobacco/tort but I have to' say that blueburst/maple combo is really intriguing....
Which pickup you choose? I had a P with a Nordstrand that sounded killer but I recently got my Sadowsky Ultra Vintage P and have to say that the Sadowsky P pickup is stellar! By far my favourite...

I've thought the same way, but I'm just not sure how much effect the woods (alder/rosewood vs ash/maple) really affect how much old school thump you can get - which is what I'm truly after.

As I said, I like all three but right now the voting is narrowly favoring the Blueburst with the Root beer close behind and then the Tobacco burst.

So far we've only talked about the Nordstrand P. I'm curious about the Sadowsky (they do have a 5-string pickup correct?) but I told Nino I'm looking for the most vintage P-bass sound I can get and I'll leave it in his hands as to which pickup works best for that.

It all depends on your definition of "old school" if your hearing Jamerson and a set of flats I'd go with the Alder/RW combo..for sure....

Well it's definitely going to have flats on it. That's the tone I want in my arsenal. I tried flats on my fretted Stambaugh (basically a super jazz with Fat Stacks and an Audere pre) but just wasn't happy with the result. So this is going to be my "thumpy" bass.

That makes me think it should have an old school look but I dig the blueburst too and I'm really going to go with whichever one "wins" this poll. Right now that's the blueburst.

Of course when Nino hears back from his finish man I'll know whether Antigua is an option which could throw a wrench in things. But from the voting and my own view of the three options I really feel like I can't go wrong and will get a beauty of a bass whichever way I go. :bassist:
