What you should think about is the color of the hardware, because that bass would look absolutely sick with black hardware on it.

I had a similar thought, but I didn't want to send the OP down another rabbit hole.

That dark red absolutely would look awesome with blacked out hardware though. I did that on one of my J's, and love the results.

You're looking at this the wrong way. A red (is that CAR?) bass with a maple board and black block inlays has to have a black pickguard - it's written in the law of most civilized states, and I'm pretty sure it's in the Bible, too.

I’ll go against the grain here and suggest clear. You could then put any color sheet, or picture behind it so you can change it out whenever you feel like it.
