Suffice it to say that not many here have experience with the 3 choices you've given and that they're not convienient to try unless you live in New Jersey you could try the Douglas at Rondos. Johnson's are out there occasionally at a few retailers.

IMO, if you're willing to spend $1100 on a bass, or even $350 on a bass, I wouldnt touch any of those.

Buy a used MIM Fender or something.

If you have $1100 to spend, seriously consider a used Peavey Cirrus 5.

I don't know much about any of those three, though between them I'd choose the douglas.

However, if you have a thousand dollars to spare (or around six hundred at least), I'd get either a Yamaha TRB fiver or an Ibanez SR505.

I second that. I just got a Yamaha RBX5 A2 that I'm loving a lot. That was 3 bills. The Yam or the Ib is a good choice.

I have a second thought about the RBX5 A2 bass. There is a youtube review about this bass, but that one is a 4-string bass. I'm sure the 5 string will do fine.

Wow I was reading this old thread, because of the Copely, someone has the same exact one in my area today for $200 on Craigslist. I WAS SHOCKED AT HOW NO ONE LISTENED TO THE OP when he stated the bass was going for $450. Everyone kept ranting about the MSRP which no one ever pays in a retail store.

Well obviously the coply will be much better then the rondo douglass. Large diff in price to. Between those two price wise theres plenty of great Ibanez, ESP Ltd, Pevaey, and other qaulity mid price 5 string basses that are more worth a look imo.

It's funny when a thread gets resurrected. Zombie Thread! Ahhhhhhhhh.

What's not funny is seeing that fake Johnson bass. Rick Johnson, a friend of mine, is a respected luthier who makes excellent custom guitars and basses under both the Johnson and Stremel trademarks.

His logo was stolen by a chinese knockoff company, who pumped out the crappiest insrtuments you can imagine and absolutely ruined his reputation as a builder. Of course he's fighting the infringement, but he is not an extremely wealthy man.

Here's an example of one of the insane guitars he's built- for pop star Ke$ha. This one actually shoots rockets out. It's nuts.

Anyway, don't mistake those pieces of poop for Rick's work. And for god's sake don't buy 'em.
