My mind is pretty much made up, but I want to know what TB thinks. Which pickguard (or lack thereof) looks the best on this baby?

You want something that ties together the burst and rosewood.
Let me be the first to say “throw it on the wood pile!”

Tortoise is the classic Fender look with sunburst and a rosewood fingerboard. To me, the white is jarring.
If you want to see all of that sunburst, you could have a clear one made. A neat look popular on a lot of JazzShapedObjects from the Far East:
An Atelier Z Dal4. Slightly different control layout and look, but you get the idea. These are tremendous instruments, BTW.

And if I may hear the common opinion here he never changed strings and swapped them between his instruments.
He only had 4.
Can you tell me with certainty that he was not attached to his pick guard which made him keep it in a safe so it couldn't be stolen? We all know what happened to the rest of that bass.
White is out, I’m too old to appreciate a bass with no pickguard, out of these 3 black wins.
I hope I don’t get my tort for life membership card revoked….
Normally I would have chosen white by default (for a burst) , but that black looks pretty damn good
