Which Sansamp

hey Guys, looking to get a Sansamp preamp and since I cannot try these out in person at the moment I'm looking for some Pros and Cons of these pedals, recommendations.. Bass Driver V2, Para Driver V2 and the Sansamp Character Series VT Bass DI. I play in a cover band doing everything from Metal to Classic Rock to Dance/Funk stuff playing through a GK Legacy 800 combo with a Jazz bass using a TC Spectracomp and a Bass Clone...Thanks

I'd have the para driver over the regular Sans amp because of the extra mid control. I'd have the VT over both of those. I just like the sound of it better. Having said all that, I'm currently digging the YYZ. Right now I'm just using it as an always-on, not for real grit, but just to warm things up a little. It makes things sound less rubbery and more ampy.

According to the manual:

"As a Pre-Amp: Run the 1/4” Output of the SansAmp YYZ directly into the power amp input, a.k.a. “effects return” (if applicable), of an amp. This will bypass the tone-coloring pre-amp section of the amp rig."

I have the Sansamp Character Series VT Bass V2 - the V2 has the speaker simulator (black button next to the LED) - I leave it on all the time - it adds a subtle presence that I like. I've also owned the Sansamp Bass Driver DI and it sounded excellent as well. I should mention that I play without an amp - ie - exclusively in headphones - Ric 4003 into Sansamp into AKG HP4E Headphone amp - love the tone.

With all of the varying styles you cover, I would absolutely go for the programmable version. Four presets would let you EASILY go from tone to tone while still maintaining the same character (and not driving the sound guy crazy).

The VT Deluxe wins for versatility, for sure.

I came here to mention the SH-1, the Steve Harris signature pedal. It's NOT just for metal; it'll easily cover traditional bass tones, and has become one of my favorite Tech 21 pedals. The SH-1 will alternate between two different tones, however the only difference between those tones is gain/volume level. The VT Deluxe is fully programmable, so you can program in wide changes in EQ (and also Character) from preset to preset.

I've spent the past day thinking about all of this, and I really wish I could buy the BDDI, the PDDI, the VTBDI, and the Q\Strip all at once and play around with them until I decided which of them I wanted to keep. (Probably all four, lol.)

BTW, the PDDI and Q\Strip both have 4.7 MΩ inputs, while the BDDI and VTBDI have 1.0 MΩ inputs.

I have both the bass driver and the para driver and I kinda prefer the paradriver. I like having more control over mid freq and I think overall it just sounds smoother than the bass driver. but really it's pretty subtle differences that you can hear if A/B-ing them but both are very good units and either would be a good choice. cheers!

Since they're all Tech 21 products you might consider calling Tech 21 - I had a technical question about impedance and emailed them for clarification (Lloyd?) - they were very friendly and helpful.

I used the Q strip for my main live DI a lot...It’s cleanest out of all 4 for sure.

I’m leaning towards the BDDI v2 just for its character...

I own the VTBDI and love it but if I had more space on my board and could re-do it, I'd go with the VT Deluxe that two fingers mentioned for the programmable settings.

Yes, you can send effected/uneffected to the XLR out to the board and likewise to the 1/4" output for your amp. Effected/uneffected are dictated by the footswitch. There is also a parallel 1/4" out that is always unaffected if you want that for your stage rig.

All sansamp have a speaker simulation but you can disable it on the VT v2
