Which tuning frequency should I set on my tuner?

Actually, I have another string question Which tuning do you use when practising and which would u recommend? (EADG or dropped C or perhaps a different one)

If you are a newbie just learning, stick with the standard EADG. That is what all of the instruction site on the web (well, the ones I know about) use. There is nothing wrong with alternate tunings if they serve a purpose. Those you can pick up later as you need or want to use them. But, master the basics first.

Keep things simple while you get the basics down.
I think it's more important to hear exactly how you sound while you are practicing than while you are performing. You want to hear your technique vividly to accelerate your learning curve, headphones help.
When you play with a group or on a loud stage you are likely to hear thing less than ideally. This is when your technique will give you confidence and allow you to sound good and play well under less than ideal conditions.

I meant to say "I don't care about the sound while practising..." And I asked about tuning because I'm planning to get new strings and I will choose guage based on the tuning I will prefer. For example now, when I tune to dropped C and play without AMP, I can't hear anything but the string hitting frets/fretboard, which doesn't feel as good as EADG without AMP.

2) If you're planning to get new strings, why did you start a thread asking if you should get new strings or not?
3) An amp. Amp is an abbreviation of amplifier. It is not an acronym or anything else that needs to be in all caps.

I do actually have a combo or amp (however you want to call it) but I just prefer to not use it while practising so I don't need to care about cables and I don't disrupt the family. It's just my personal preference and it totally makes a sense to use what you just linked there

If it has a headphone out, I highly suggest using that with flat settings on the amp eq. Flat means all eq in the center position, no boost or cut.

There are a lot of ways to get your signal, along with an MP3 source or whatever to play along, to a pair of headphones. I use a $50 mixing board.

As others have said, tune EADG to start. It's the best way to learn your notes and intervals using any number of study aids. You DO want to learn your notes and intervals.

Forgive me if I am stating the obvious but as a beginner, you might not be aware of this fact: If you want to play a song in the key of C, is not necessary to tune the bass to drop C tuning. You can play songs in any key without leaving standard EADG tuning.

Stu Hamm tunes 3 cents flat so setting the tuner to 439Hz will be minuscule flat but Stu claims that the bass and especially the two low strings (E and A) inherently have a slightly sharp attack and tuning this tiny amount flat makes the bass sit better in the mix and make the overall sound more "relaxed"..

And that also can be applied for the bass player but a chair will be required in order to sit better and be more relaxed.

There are some guitar players I know that tune by ear and it doesn’t matter what frequency my tuners set to I’m still always out of tune. Guess tuners are just that unreliable!
