In my opinion, real musicians don't disrespect those who are vastly superior to them. Whitney Houston redefined what singing was. She took it to another level, and literally MILLIONS of people tried to copy her, and in my opinion, NONE did so successfully.

Remember, Amy Winehouse's death was partially due to how bad she'd wrecked her body through years of drugs and heavy drinking. Whether or not drugs or alcohol were the immediate cause of Mrs. Houston's death, they were certainly a contributing factor.

Regardless, it's still a tragedy and the loss of a phenomenally beautiful voice.

I just heard "Saving All My Love for You" on the radio yesterday and thought to myself that, even though I prefer the style of some other singers to Whitney, I've never heard a better singer than Whitney Houston in her prime. RIP, and thanks so much for so many wonderful and transcendent vocal performances.

I've never been a big fan, but that really is an amazing performance. Wow.

She had a great voice, very powerful when she started singing. The live performances I heard when she "peaked" (or right after) didn't impress me, I thought she "warbled" way too much (trying to throw 500 notes into one syllable) although she still had a strong voice.

While it's definately too early to say with certainty that her lifestyle and drug use directly caused her death, the tragedy of her career should still serve as a reminder that drug use wrecks lives.

Nevertheless, may she rest in peace from the demons that haunted her in life.

I do not think this is a very accurate characterization of Miss Houston's style. I think it fits her many imitators, but Whitney did the melismas in a manner that fit the feel of the material she was doing. I don't believe she ever overdid it. And her control while doing it was simply amazing.

She didn't just have a "strong voice." She had one of the most amazing instruments I've ever heard.

Celine Dion and Mariah Carey, in my opinion, are not fit to shine her shoes. She never overemoted; she just sang what the song called for, and did it with breathtaking power.

She set a new standard.

She influenced millions.

She was the Jimi Hendrix of soul vocals.

An amazingly talented lady who struggled with addiction.
I thank her for her contributions to music and film.
If I "had" to bet on the autopsy results I would place my bet like most of you. But being 60 and having lost friends who never abused anything to heart disease and cancer and stroke and etc, I am gonna wait to go tsk tsk.
Some of them died in their 30's of natural causes folks.

I hope Christina Aguilera is not allowed to butcher any Whitney Houston songs at her funeral the way she slaughtered "At Last" when Etta James was laid to rest. I like Aguilera, but she often tries way too hard to show she has soul. That was what was so cool about Whitney Houston, she had a great sense of what was enough.

She had ten times the chops as any of them, but one hundred times the restraint. She was the one who put that style, (in my opinion first popularized by Stevie Wonder,) on the map. Everyone else did it as a STYLE. Whitney did it as EXPRESSION.

There is a huge difference. I feel very passionately about Whitney Houston. I don't care about her as a star, or as a personality.

I only care about her as a MUSICIAN, and she had a talent that transcended the genre.
