Who’s playing a squire?

Thinking of buying a Squire bass for a second bass back up
The price is certainly right
Is it really just a beginner bass?
Or should I just spend the extra bucks and buy a made in Mexico bass?

I own 5 Fender basses and no Squier basses.
It seems on TB the general consensus by Squier owners is that the Classic Vibe and Vintage Modified models are great, but to stay away from the Affinity models.
I’m sure someone here can elaborate further.

I've got three now, actually just picked this one up this afternoon (photo below). A Matt Freeman ($175 used a few years ago), a Mike Dirnt P I got NOS for $200 but upgraded the pup and bridge, and I'm thinking this one is a Classic Vibe (stole it off Craigslist today for $90 bucks!) but not entirely sure yet. I gig mine in rotation regularly and they all play great and sound great. The gear snobs might turn their noses up at them but I have no issues rotating them in with my higher end basses and my band mates like the sounds I get from them so why pay more? Point of diminishing returns.

I would advise against Squire basses. If you want an affordable but decent bass, get a Squier instead.

By no means. Got this little monster a few weeks ago. Changed out the pots and bridge, used some Mohawk fingerboard oil, got a ten dollar Musiclily pickguard (fit perfectly, no drilling or filing) and I’ll put this Jazz bass up against anyone’s.

Depends, are we talking about Squier Affinity, Classic Vibe or Vintage Modified?
Affinity's are beginner basses and are hit or miss but when modded they can be decent players.

I play Fenders, Squiers, Peavey's Yamaha's, parts basses ect. They all have thier place in my stable I'd offer up this, (generalizations of course), and there are hit and misses with most brands but in my opinion and experience (as far as Squiers go) for quality fit & finish are as follows...best/worst.

1. Squier Matt Freeman China
2. Squier CV, VM Crafted in China
3. Squier Standard (various)
4. Squier Vintage Modified Indo
5. Squier Classic Vibe Indonesia
6. Squier Affinity China/Indonesia

I just put a 2020 Classic Vibe Precision neck on a 2008 Vintage Modified Jazz body with the stock pickups, and I think it sounds and plays as good as my 2020 Fender MIM Jazz bass. I'm having a lot of fun with this Squier parts bass.

I've got one sitting in a gig bag that I haven't started to mess with yet, but also just played a Paranormal at a Music go round yesterday... if I'd have had more room in the car I'd have bought it.

These are the kinds of questions/threads that turn me off from Talkbass. A member since 2013 asking "how are squires?" feels like a paid commercial.

The Vintage Modified '77 jazz bass on the left is perfect. A joy to play, and a great sound. Bought it used for $200 and it is probably the bass I play most.

Bone stock 70s CV P is my #1. I have zero hesitation about rocking a Squier on a gig (and do so). I am well beyond caring about anyone's opinion of the legitimacy of the logo on the headstock. I have and have had a few Squiers and have stayed with CV, VM or Standard and they have been fantastic. I suspect the Affinities are fine but I just prefer the models that aren't so numerous out in the wild.

@EdO. pretty sure your new one is a Vintage Modified. I bought one just like it not too long ago and did the research.

I play one quite a bit. It sounds and plays good, no issues... I'd put it up against my higher dollar basses.

Hopefully not Lady Chatterly . Never cared for them because I already have basses when they started becoming popular. I did try out a couple GC today. If I lost everything and have to start from scratch, I would not mind them at all. No mods necessary.

Really sensible line from Fender - In a way -- I think it follows Leo's vision making functioning instruments affordable and available to the masses.
