I've owned/played/gigged with just about every type of bass out there.
For some reason, a "Fender" ( I say that because it could also be Sadowsky, Lull etc...) seemed to always work in any situation.
I have sessions pretty much every night this week.
I took a few basses, all of which sound great- Yamaha BB5000, Valenti J/MM 5, Fender Jazz 4, Sadowsky NYC 5.
I pulled out the Sadowsky first and it fit perfectly.
One tune I grabbed my Valenti, sounded great, could have kept it, but tried the Sadowsky and it just fit better.
Same with my old Jazz.
Like I said, I could have used the Valenti all night, but I even agreed, the Sadowsky (Fender) just worked better.
Quite a number of basses, MTD for example, have such a wide frequency response, they just don't work as well in a mix. Either live or in the studio. They tend to consume a lot of sonic space.
Not saying that these basses can't and don't work, they do with wonderful results at times,
but something about just plugging in and having the fader pushed up and getting, "Wow, that works!", and nothing else has to be done....well, that's money right there!
(at least that what happens every time with my Sadowsky!
