Grooveguru: Didn't you just get rid of a Roscoe? You prefer a Warwick over a Roscoe? I guess diversity makes the world go around. Hope you enjoy it.

I committed to buying a new bass this week...Hoyt 5 string neck, 2in wide nut, wide/thin D profile, 16 in. radius, maple neck with pau ferro finger board, Warmoth Ash Jazz body with natural finish, everything but the pups and electronics... Karl says he's about to start building the neck now!!!!
damn guys, nice basses. hey oddio, your wal looks real nice, but i think the knobs kinda throw off the look (IMO). That bass would look awesome if you threw on some Sadowsky knobs. Man i wish i had that kind of money... but i'm saving up for either a Ric 4003 or a MM Stingray. hey, i'm only 16 and i get 6.50 an hour, so it'll be a little while...

Don't feel bad -- money can't buy skill! I'm sure Jaco would have done fine for himself with a MIM jazz!
Of course, this is little consolation for those of us who are broke AND suck...
The whole gear thing is so seductive... I imagine I'd be significantly better if I took all the time I spend screwing around with gear and used it for practice instead. All this business of finding "your tone" and all -- I think it's kind of a cop-out (no offense meant -- this is self-directed criticism here). What good is tone without rhythm? I'm planning on taking my L-1000 (1 pup, simple bass) going on a gear hiatus for a while. If I can't get a good tone with G&L, a Trace v-type pre, and an Epifani 2x12 it's my fault. No more for me, I'm back on the wagon. I swear. For as long as I can stand it...

Junglebike...without a power amp your tone won't be very loud
Actually, I agree with you. The old saying "It's the magician, not the wand" applies. Jaco, Vic, Geddy, JPJ whomever would sound like themselves on a cheap bass...and you would sound like yourself on their gear.
A long, long time ago, when I was in highschool (mid '70s), I used to tag along with a drummer friend of mine who played in a polka wedding band with a bunch of "old guys" (in their 40s). The bassist had a nasty violin shaped bass with dead strings had insanely high action, plugged into a little Gibson Thor amp (20 watts into 2x10s). He played with his thumb, using all downstrokes so he could hold his cigarette while playing. It sounded amazing!!! His tone was to die for, in a thumpy, serve the song kind of way.
Oh, if you enjoy playing and it makes you happy, you don't suck no matter how far from pro-level your playing is.
I'll get off my soapbox now (and stop highjacking this thread)...

Hey Romeoarmada... I've been playing for almost 37 years and I've yet to find a "perfect" bass. I traded a microphone and $100 for my first "real" bass, and it's still one of the better instruments I own. You'll find one that connects too. Just keep saving and playing everything that you can get your hands on.
The controls on the Wal do look a bit odd, but they're designed to make it easy to pull up on - to activate the attack and the fancy filters.

Ohhhh ok (the wal). i don't really know much about them, so i didn't know they had filters and such.

I guess I am the last one to report in. Canada Customs (the bane of our existence here) ensured that my Wal did not clear for the weekend. Anyhow, having just arrived home and being anxious to get down to some serious playing... I've snapped a few quick pics. First impression - totally blown away. This bass is so well-balanced it seems well-under 10 pounds, especially compared to my Warwicks. Anyhow, a full report will follow.

Bob the first Roscoe 5 I got had some issues so I returned it for a Lakland Dual J. It was too "Old School" sounding so I swapped it for another Roscoe. This Roscoe was a 4 banger and it was much better than my 5 but I don't play 4's anymore so when the deal came up for the Warwick Streamer Stage I jumped on it. For all you folks not big on Warwicks the Stage I has some traits that set them apart from most "wicks". First off the spacing is 20mm which is "wide" my friends. Second the neck profile isn't the Warwick pronounced "D" shape, it's quite thin front to back more like a flattened oval. Third the all maple constuction gives it a more mellow throaty kind of growl. Fourth the balance of the Streamer shape is perfect. Very unWarwicklike!
I like this bass very much but that said I would trade it in a minute for an MTD 535/635 or Sadowsky. Anyone not happy with their MTD or Sadowsky???? So who knows what will happen. Man I'm starting to make Funky Carnivore look bad in the bass swapping department.
