Well, is there any chance you could contact me directly? I am obsessed with this Mando Bass and want to either build one, buy that one, or pay someone to build another one.
Sure you are. You know it was bought by a retired doctor in Germany. That's a heckuva lot more than you knew when you started the thread...
Well I for one never doubted the photo or the instrument's authenticity or existence but here we are.....five pages into a thread....of a mythical Mando Bass that now resides SOMEWHERE in Germany....How on EARTH am I going to recreate this thing?!?!?
Call the luthier. Have a chat. Maybe he'll do one more, maybe he can recommend someone who might, maybe he still has drawings, maybe he even just got word of the doctor's passing. Try!
I did not see a mandobass at DelFest last weekend. Gotta believe if somebody was going to see it at a gig then it would have been there.
There is a 1918 Gibson mandobass currently for sale in the classifieds on UMGF...not an F type, though.

R.M. Mottola made the Bassola, which is a F mandolin shape but isn't played upright. Maybe consult with him on getting one built?

I could join the group, but I have already joined this one and several others and for the love of god people I don't even play the mandolin.....I am a bassist that wants to buy that McGuffin artifact, the UPRIGHT MANDO BASS....

If you compare this mandobasss to a mandolin, it is easy to see the mandobass is simply not a dropped-in mandolin. The neck, strings, tuners, bridges, string retainers, nut, body depth are simply not in scale.
But that barn in the background, thats been photoshopped in, that’s for sure.
The mandobass on the picture was manufactured in the early 90th by string instrument maker Barry Ford, Woodford Cottages, Woodford near Twywell, England. His Wife Annie Ford holds it upright and the barn in the back shows his workshop, in which the mando-bass was custom made.
