It's unlikely to be personal, and you'd be surprised at how much identifying information you let slip. One little bit by itself isn't much, but think of them as snowflakes that can be collected by a team who build snowballs.
A smart approach to an identity-theft campaign is the low-margin, high-volume one. Rip off lots of people, but for small enough amounts that it's probably not worth them coming after you, once they've replaced their credit-cards, etc.
Then there are the ones that use disposable identities to cover their tracks.
Neither approach cares who you are, personally.
You can use automated smart-systems to hoover up a lot of data, and then all you need is a way to connect the dots.
Hoover up lots of small groups of dots, auto-connect them as the connections come to hand, then once a cluster passes a threshold, it's ready for use. Make a couple of phone-calls and/or fill in a few web-forms, and use the results quickly.
It just occurred to me that a system I'm building could be really useful for that, which is not a happy thought. I'll have to factor that into some design decisions, because I'd rather not enable this kind of thing.
over the years at TB, i've talked about my age (i'm now 63), that i live in los angeles, that my husband is a guitarist who's active here on the repair and luthier forums. i've talked about my basses, that we live in a condo, and this was where i came when our 21 year old cat passed away because i have many friends and people here who i know love their animals.
i've talked about and shared music i love, music i like, bands i've been in, rehearsal studios i've played at and a bunch of other stuff. i've mentioned when i started playing bass, started playing guitar, and that i don't know a thing about recording.
and as many of you know, i was once trapped in quicksand!

Well here goes! Male. Age:I was in the first wagon train to California. I live there now. I’ve lived at the beach and in the snowy mountains. I first picked up a bass some 58 years ago and have been playing off and on since. I’ve owned over 400 basses and repair and build instruments.
Remember 70’s Punk? I am the original bass player for Eddie and the Subtitles.
“American Society” (Fast Version”) was recorded By the lead guitarist for the Alley Cats. The flip side was a Louie Louie Cover. I was the bass player on both those recordings. I played a 1978 Precision through an SVT and an Ampeg 9/10 Fridge! Wow that thing could flap your pants and shake the stage!
Started playing a Ric in ‘73 but soon thereafter started playing a P bass. I love the Precision and Jazz basses a lot.
Some of the amps I have owned are SVT/9/10 Cab-ACOUSTIC WITH 4/15- SWR REDHEAD SWR TRIAD and more.
Before the punk experience I had an opportunity to jam with some EWAF Band members And some professional Horn players in a nightclub. It was my first solo with a drummer! Afterwords at a get together I was offered an audition with Marvin Gaye! Although I was flattered I had to turn it down.
As I got older and married my wife and I had 5 kids. Four were born at home with midwives. Our mountain life made it impossible to get to a hospital. Also because of storms we opted for home schooling. 18 years made us one of the longest home schooling parents at that time. Not easy!! Now let’s add to that 14 years working in snowstorms. I was the only plumber in my area at that time who would brave the storms and make service calls while it was snowing!
As the years went by I played in different Rock and Blues bands. One was an originals band that I put together with a friend. Avalon Highway. We played along the beach. For a while we had the honor of playing with Bubba Bryant Jr. Bubba was the drummer for the Temptations when he passed. He was also the drummer for The Back Street Boys and their Musical Director
Bubba was a great guy playing with top stars and worked as a studio musician for the studios. you can hear his work on “The Jeffersons”. He also worked for George Benson Roberta Flack and many others.
The best compliment he ever gave me was
“ You don’t play a lot of notes but you’re a bad Cat”.

In my remaining life, I just worked as a contractor until I retired. My wife ( Now married 41 years) although we have been together longer, I met when she was 16!!
I do a ZZ TOP TRIBUTE with my Brother in law. I play Billy Gibbons and my B in L plays bass. Lately just building and modding Guitars and basses. New Year’s Day I was admitted to emergency and had to undergo a 10 hour Surgery. Great Surgeon saved my life! We bonded so I gave him a jazz bass. He was like kid as he walked away. It was awesome.
I play through a Rumble 200c with a 15”! Love my 15. Love my Rumble. I currently own five basses and Two more on the way. Thanks for your time.

One time back in the 90's I went to meet up with some guys at a parking lot near a freeway in Tacoma so they could lead me to where the audition was. I had sat there waiting in my car for about 10 minutes and someone tried to open the passenger door and get in my car. I didn't immediately connect the dots, but when the dude from the band failed to show up I realized someone tried to carjack me and I inadvertently foiled their plan by having my passenger door locked.
That was the incident that sparked my paranoia. Though I don't quite think I'm tin-foil-hat material, I DO assume the worst in people until proven otherwise.
Now, I'M the guy who checks up on people before I meet them at an audition. Before I agree to meet up with anyone from a craigslist ad or facebook, I know where they live, who they are related to, what they do for a living and I find out if they have any criminal history. A few years back, I discovered the guy who's band I was fixing to go audition for was a convicted sex-offender. I posted a thread here about it that started a bit of controversy.
The other point I'd like to make is that you never really know about the friends of acquaintances who know you in real life. Let's say you own a rare guitar worth over 5 grand and you've shown it off to one of the guys in your band. Well people talk about such things and your bandmate happens to be friends with this shady guy he used to be in another band with. This shady guy knows how to look you up online and the next thing you know you are filing a police report for a home invasion and stolen property.
