I don't share too much info to "keep it light". Having a degree of separation is healthy when talking about online interactions. I've checked people's info a handful of times because someone seemed worth looking into or because someone expressed an obsolete opinion and I wanted to have some context before replying.

Blue checks on Twitter often call the anonymous, cowards for not revealing their true identities. I sometimes respond with, unless you're selling something (book, music, movie, product, service, etc...) why would you open yourself up?

TL;DR --- while there are good reasons not to share some things on your information page, why not share enough to be helpful to others who may want to be helpful to you, or to give advice to you!?
I blame hackers, Im hesistant to post too much info, better safe... who knows what evil they can glean by innocently posting something, Im nobody special,& dont mind sharing but Id hate to be a victim, cause I felt compelled to share some info for no good reason. sorry

POV: when i actually joined the TB party = i didn't know any better so i filled out my information page with what i thought was enough info to get me going. (i don't think i've changed anything since then --- maybe i should?)

i didn't look at other's information pages (i mean: "why?") until i began to realize that knowing at least a little bit about the OP/poster could be helpful in giving a response (context). also: some of us have avatars/info present every time we post, while others 'reveal' nothing about themselves except what can be gleaned from a posting (often difficult, sometimes impossible). i don't think i/we need a lot of info: just the basics!
e.g.
- gender
- general location (country, part of the country)
- age or age group
- music: general experience, if any
- music we like/play

not knowing anything about another member can make it difficult to:
- give age/gender-appropriate feedback
- give location-appropriate feedback
- empathize
- care
- other reasons: explain your own!

FWIW: i've mentioned this 'issue' in a couple of threads and others have occasionally posted similar thoughts re: the lack of info on a member's information page! i'm curious about the reasons why some folks don't share some info/context.

Sometimes mentioning an innocent past memory will cause spiteful, snarky commentary. It’s as though someone bringing you down makes them feel better... And human nature is a .....
Not everyone here is a mature, well balanced adult... And arguing trivialities over the net is a waste of energy.
So, I don’t fault anonymity... To each their own.
When I first posted here, I was the only Draymiles on the net... Now, there are 6 or 7 last time I checked... I wonder...

There’s two forums I belong to that require the use of your actual name to join. Keeps discussion quite civil for the most part but there are still nutjobs out there.

I suppose on these forums you could use a made-up actual name but I don’t.

When I want fake anonymity, I use my “road name”: Steve Dallas.

I have done plenty of rude things in my many decades. I guess by not providing enough information I'm being rude and I hadn't considered that.

I have put audio and video of myself playing. It makes me feel pretentious even though I admire others for doing the same thing. Nobody's going to try to identify me but at the same time, I'm pretty unimportant so what do those details matter? But if it's a matter of politeness and people really think I have something to hide, then I guess I'll have to go beat myself up for a while. I'm good at that.
