Who are you?

My name is Jason, I'm 33, i started playing the bass at 10.
I have built 2 pvc basses, in the process with my first 2 wooden basses. Have done setup and minor, minor guitar and bass repair (my weakest point is electronics currently).
A little Furniture restoring and guitar/bass cab building / refurbs.
Woodwork is no question a fascination for me. I also am a partner in a small recording studio, as well as a decent recording setup at home too.

I am a contractor for SAIC, a Systems administrator for the National weather service. Been married for a little over a year, my wife is currently 7mo. pregnant (first for her and I.) Lucked out and share a shop with my father, which is about 30x75, right next to my house.

My Wife and I.
Congratulations on the newest member of the band coming soon!!!

Occupation: police sergeant-23 years
Builds: 3 CGB’s, starting my first bass. (A newbie)
Family: Wife, 4 daughters, 3 sons

Just took up woodworking as a hobby. Started noodling on bass last year after a 29 year hiatus. Love to “tinker” and build things, so trying my hand at some basic building. It all takes my mind off my day job which is good.

Feel free to post your latest bass building/project.

Pets: 4 cats
Never had a cat before I got married. It was a package deal. I have since discovered that being female is not a requirement in order to become a ‘crazy cat lady’

My first build was a Les Paul copy when I was around 18 years old. My mom put on the finish. It was a economical way to get a nice guitar.
I play several instruments, was best on the trumpet, but never played quite well enough to go pro.
I did lots of DIY and home renovation over the years, but didn’t circle back to guitar building until just a few years ago. It has since become a passion. Oddly, I don’t play bass at all. However, my nephew is very good on bass, so that was the impetus for my first bass build. After that, I was hooked.
I will attach some pics.
The red room is my office, in which I display some of my builds.
I am the guy in the IU sweatshirt holding a Rick copy I was building as a gift.
My nephew, the giftee, is shown wearing the completed Rick copy.

:) Welcome Jim! A custom made instrument is a pretty special gift! (your nephew looks happy!) Do you still have your LP copy? Feel free to start a build thread in LC if you ever make another bass - friendly folks here -

Yes, still have the Les hanging on my wall. I take it for a spin once in a while.
I will be starting a new build relatively soon. Thinking about a 5 string fretless, semi hollow body bass with piezo and magnetic pickups. Not sure if I will use Humbuckers or single coil. Haven’t completely worked out the design in my head yet. I keep swinging back and forth between a Hoffner style or something a bit like a firebird. It will definitely be a throughbody neck rather than a bolt on. That’s a bit of a fetish of mine.
I’d love to hear some other folks thoughts on those components.
Currently finishing a pseudo SG.
I will see about documenting the upcoming bass here as it is built. I’d love to get some suggestions and feedback. Never built a fretless, a semi hollow body, or used piezo before. As usual, I am jumping straight into the deep water without a vest

Will look forward to your upcoming build thread on LC. Jumping into the deep end is one way to learn and the folks on LC will help whenever they can -

Using a combo of magnetic and piezo pickups is a bit of a recurring thought of mine, so I'll be interested to see how yours works out if you go that route.
Going through neck for a fretless build allows for a minimally intrusive neck to body transition and even an easy extended upper register range, depending on your final body shape. I'm with you on the semi hollow, though you might want to consider the possibility of neck dive, particularly with body shapes that have no upper horn for when the bass is on a strap. (Not an unsurmountable problem, but a possible issue to watch out for.)

Yes, jump in at the deep end, the worst that can happen is you learn things to apply to future builds.

Hi guys,
Introduction.
I'm Chad and I'm a government employee.
I've built 8 or so Strats and Teles from parts casters to full builds with detailed inlay and bindings.
I'm CptRyg on the tdpri forum for telecasters where I pretty much learned everything I know.
I recently picked up a job for a 5 string fretless neck-through so here I am hoping to pick up some lessons learned and to see what else I need to learn.
I'll be sure to start a build thread on that and capture for YouTube.

And this is what I'm going for based off of an Ibanez. The Bass Clef Cat is a tatoo she has on her wrist.
Greyburst flame maple with ebony fret board and black perloid inlay. Ash body with Flame maple neck laminated with either ebony or walnut strips. Control cover will be something to do with the Philippines flag.

Hello TBers,
New to the forums, new to luthiery, been lurking on this forum for a while, figure I should step out of the shadows. I have been amazed by the level of talent displayed here and have picked up a lot just from following the various build threads.
Been a hobbyist woodworker for some time, been a "bass player" for a little over a year, recently decided I needed to build basses. Have completed one bass and a couple kits, as of a month ago, I started 2 more project basses. Will probably start a build thread at some point.
Also, in my spare time, I am part-owner of a bike shop.

Bruce Bennett.
I started repairing and building instruments in 1979 at age 16.
in 1992 I went to work for Gibson Guitars in Nashville at the Steinberger/Tobias Bass division.
In 1994 I started Warrior Instruments along with partners J.D Lewis, Michael Terrell and William Fix
in 2007 I started J.Backlund Design guitars with partners Kevin Maxfield and Steve Lewis. under the corporation called BML inc.
currently I own Bennett Music Labs and sub-contract with William Fix at Judah guitars making EVH replicas.
Planning to release a new bass design for 2020 which I will hopefully debut here at the TB Winter build-off.
I've been a member here for a rather long time, but I don't post much for the simple reason that if I'm given the opportunity to waste time.. I just will... and internet forums waste a LOT of time.

Occupation: Acoustic physicist, specializing in room acoustics, DSP, ANC, and microphone array processing.
Family: Wife and 3 kids
Previous Builds: 24 complete, four in progress, no including my Cepheid 5 bass that I posted about here recently.

I love to design my own instruments, as the challenge and trying new things is what keeps me building. I have only very rarely built 2 of the same thing: 3/4 scale PRS-style guitars for my kids and I am doing a small run of 3 of my own super strat design (one for me, one for a friend, one that will likely just get sold).

I actually work with Greg Yancey of Yancey basses. He and I routinely bounce building ideas off of each other and just have a great time shooting the breeze about guitars and bass. Since bass isn't my main squeeze, I may not be around here tons, but I do love the willingness of the folks here to really think outside the box and just make do with what is at hand at times. I feel like regular guitarists sometimes get locked into a rut about things sometimes.

Hey good to see you over here, I normally run into you over at MLP. :D

Hey folks! My real world name is Steve and I've been a TB user/fan since 2005. I'm a software engineer by day, and an addicted bass builder by night/weekend when I'm not spending time with my wife and 2 kids (they are awesome and my biggest fans).

I have been playing bass for about 25 years and have been a tinkerer for many of those years. After modding my basses, repairing other folks basses, etc, I really wanted to get into building, but didn't know where to start. After prodding from a good friend who is a 25+ year woodworker/carpenter, I finally took the plunge. I now build basses under the name m7 (Minor 7).

Here are a few of the basses I have built, also detailed in build threads here.

Welcome Steve - some nice basses you've built there! You should post the thread links by each so those interested can check out more details.
