Who do you hear in your playing?

I was once compared to Jaco by a fan. I laughed.

Duck, mostly. Maybe a pinch of Larry Taylor or Tony Garnier on my better days.
After spending years practicing and learning their styles, I've been accused of copping a very convincing JPJ, Chris Squire, and Allen Woody vibe. Also had the honor of being compared to Jaco, Jamerson, and Ray Brown from time to time, but I had to politely state that I am unfortunately nowhere near that level of badassery.
Early on, I too was heavily influenced by Gary Thaine.
I like to think its playing " melodic ", but it's probably more like "busy". I just don't like guitarists having all the fun!

Mostly people say I sound like me. Whatever gear I’m using doesn’t seem to matter. I guess I prefer that. I have had people say “you sound like Nathan East” or whomever but that’s probably because I quoted a lick or something.
I Would say my influences were Geddy Lee and Stave Harris in my HS days. Some Journey/Ross Valley. Journey lines work in al kinds of places. I use them a lot at church. College was a lot of jazz guys. I played in a horn. And for a while and of course we did TOP so I got some Rocco there. Smooth jazz quartet did some Yellowjackets and I even had a lesson with Jimmy Haslip so big influence there.

I've never thought, or been told, of sounding like anyone else. I've definitely had influences in many genres that I try to mimic, if only to understand what it is they do to fit into a track so well. Mainly time and feel, and those things are 100% individual. I think I just sound like me. I wish I sounded like a better me.
What an interesting question! I don't think I naturally sound like anyone in particular. Perhaps this is because I never devoted much time or effort to emulate any particular player. So over the years I've naturally developed what I think is my own sound and style (albeit with bits and pieces mixed in ranging from Jaco and Pino and Rocco to Cliff Williams and Ian Hill and Rob Wasserman, etc.). It would be really interesting to me (but rather self-indulgent) to have another bassist analyze my sound/style and tell me who it resembles.
I had never really pondered this question before. I guess tone and feel wise I sound like me. Everybody's hands are their own. Style wise I would guess that I phrase and articulate a lot like Larry Grenadier. I have been playing a lot of Brad Mehldau the last two years and he has a very complimentary style to his playing.
20-year-old me playing reggae keeps popping up in my jazz and latin playing. It doesn't always work, but it sure is different.
