Who does custom instrument modifications / alterations?

Say for example Ive got an B/O bass with a 1-pc ash body and a poly finish. Say for example I'd like to have the finish removed, a 1/4" sanded off the top of the ash body and replaced with an exotic wood top, then refinished with an oil/wax finish .......does anyone know of any shops that do this kind of work?

Michael Dolan quoted me $200 to do just that without the finish work. Well, he'd use a planer instead of sanding but it's the same result.

What kind of top are you doing?

It was a swamp ash bolt on Tobias body with an oil type finish and I mentioned a walnut top and got that quote. Stripping poly will add a lot of labor. I never had him do the work though.

Dolan is a wonderful craftsman and a wonderfully nice guy to boot.

I played Major Metal's violin bass that Dolan built, and that thing is a BEAUTY. The work is impeccable, and I wouldn't hesitate to send business is way.

Well, I thought I'd chime back in here and let everyone know that I never heard anything back from the Dolan guy. My email server gives me return rcpts..... he red my email the same day I sent it, and never responded. I sent another email just for good measure, again read the same day and never responded...........so I guess thats my vote AGAINST using Mike Dolan..........

Try Basskahuna here on Talkbass. He has a website too. I used to have a beautiful Elrick to which he added a walnut top with a bloodwood veneer. It looked like it had always been that way. I wish I still had that bass.
