Who else here uses 12s and 15's?

I agree with you on what people want to hear and believe, to each their own. But, I do not understand beaming, what is it exactly?

beaming is where the larger the driver is, the more the mids and highs dispersion through the house is cut back. so a 15" will disperse mids and highs in the house worse than a 10". but if you take two 10"s and put them in two columns like an 810 or 410, they will combine to have the dispersion characteristics of a 20" speaker. and it's called "beaming" because the effect of it is where you hear nothing but lows and some mids off to the side of your cab, and all the highs gather in front of the cab and shoot out like a laser beam.

it's especially noticeable with guitar amps but it also happens with bass, though it really doesn't bother me as much to use cabs with poor dispersion. but that's why pa's are built vertically now with speakers the right size to disperse mids and highs better.

I and every other GS412 owner would disagree with this. The cab has tremendous low-end and faithfully reproduces a Low-B with ease. So I'm really confused right now.

i was using a 4x12 aggy with a bbe sonic maximiser/no effects...eden wt500 head ...and at a decent loud volume ...those 12's couldnt hold a candle to my bagend 15

1100 dollars i guess i just expected much more the cab is light ..felt almost cheap to me the tweeter was real loud i had to keep it almost off ...i wasnt trashing the cab it sounds better than any 4x10 i have ever played even 6x10..But to me its big / expensive / and doesnt perform the way i want it to..Im happy that you guys like it...i didnt ..I think my 2x10and 1x15 sounds way better than the aggy ever did...but i also like sugar in my tea...some dont dont..

I use a single 12 in my mesa wa scout, it has a down firing 10 though....I think 12s are the meeting ground between a 10 and 15, tight but low sounding..

FYI... that 'downfiring' speaker is not a speaker at all, but a passive radiator. No sound comes out of it.. it is similar to a port, and is used for additional tuning of the cab.

a 12 does not have the bottom end of a 15 ...Its impossible ..if that was case ..they wouldnt make 15 inch speakers

I'm hesitant to believe that speaker size doesn't matter anymore... why else would every amp company be releasing more and more speaker options?

Some 12's have more low end than some 15's. Not all makes, models or brands are qual.

One of my main rigs for a few years now consists of a Bag End S-12B on top of an S-15B both powered by a GK400RB. This makes for a nice, portable rig that puts out ample mids and a fair amout of bass as well, and it sounds good to my ears. I am aware of "comb filtering" which can occur when mixing different drivers without benefit of crossover, but I think this is a more important issue with P.A. setups than instrument rigs. My rig sounds good to me, and I have received compliments from the front of the house by people who should know. Speaking of the front of the house, we are pretty much at the mercy of sound guys who in my experience universally want to run pre-EQ DI rather than take the trouble to mike the amp. At the street festivals and such that my 50's-60's band plays, this often results in way too much volume and bass, at least to my ears. I mostly use roundwound strings in order to have a bit more definition in this environment. The value of the bass rig becomes how well it functions in the stage mix. I realize I have touched on several issues that have been discussed ad infinitum on this forum already, this is just my personal take.

I personally still use 10's but heres a cool video in which King Buzzo from Melvins talks about how people should use the combination of 12's & 15's and that they'd be suprised by how good it sounds. He also talks about his Sunn gear.

I've used 12's for several years now. I do like them. I used to use primarily 15's but the 12's have a bit more crispness that the 15's just don't have.

I could see how that would be a tempting option, but seeing as a how i play an extended piccolo bass a lot of the time i like a little more mid-range movement

My 1x15 is very middy. Much moreso than my 2x10, actually.

Clearly, 12s are better for 5-string because they are not clearly divisible by 5. 15 is divisible by 5 so you get a 3 and that makes the tone zero out because there's no remainder.. when you divide 12 by 5, you get a remainder of 2 which gives you like 2x as much tone.
