Who else here uses 12s and 15's?

I recently got rid of my 4x10 and in it's place got a 1x12 and a 1x15. I couldn't be happier! when I talk to people who play bass and random people at music stores they're weirded out by my combination. they seem to think if i'm going to use a 15 then i've GOT to put a 2x10 on top of it, or buy an 8x10 etc...

personally the only way my setup could be any better was if i traded my 1x12 for a 2x12.... but otherwise... who's permanently left the 10 inch band wagon?

I think I may stop using 10's entirely... but it's in the other direction. Main cab is an 8x8 now.

interesting. I can't say i've ever used an 8 inch speaker except the one that was in my little fender practice amp when i first started learning to play. how's the sound in comparison to 10's?

The brightest, tightest cab I own is 15 loaded, and the deepest, widest sounding cab I own has 10's.

These days, better to not really focus on the size of the driver, but rather the voicing of the driver and the tuning of the box. IMO!

Long gone are the days when driver size was strongly correlated with low end production.

I could see how that would be a tempting option, but seeing as a how i play an extended piccolo bass a lot of the time i like a little more mid-range movement

i dunno... i've played through a lot of newer cabs with all size speakers and even though the smaller speakers can produce lower towns now, i can still hear a very noticeable difference even when playing through the same cab line with different speakers....

2x12 SWR '12 pack' and boogie theile cab. Sounds great.
Only thing I can imagine better would be a 4x12 and 2x15. But my back wouldnt be happy.

This statement qualifies nothing but your own opinion in a specific situation. If that's what you heard then that's what you heard. But the truth is, the logic that speaker size is the only factor or even the biggest factor in audio reproduction has become obsolete. What the speaker is constructed of and cabinet design account for almost all of its acoustic properties. And it seems like everyone except one (we all know who) is manipulating those to their advantage.

To answer your question though, I've used an Aguilar GS412 for the last year and a half and I couldn't be happier.

+1 Every cab sounds different from every other cab, just not in the way you would think sometimes.

Me either. With the exception of a Musicman cab with an "18, I've always used 2x15 to great effect. I like 4x12's also.

It depends on the cab (brand)..i used a 4x12 aggy ...and hated it...but thats because i used a 5 sring ..with a 4 string it sounded great...imo if you play a five string ..and you want to turn up your rig 10's nor 12's are going to handle my low b dropped to A...ive tried over and over ...when i used my aggy i had to run a 15 with it...i was running a eden wt 500 ...now im so happy with my rig ...its a markbass 2x10 with a bag end 1x15
and a markbass f1...outstanding ...but if you play a 5 you have to have a 15 ....unless you are metallica and playing in front of a wall of 8x10 cabs....I dont think your rig is that weird . markbass is some good stuff ..use what you want to use its your rig

I have played through just about every combination over the years, but currently playing through two Schroeder cabs -
a 2 x 12 Lite and a 4 x 12 Lite and I am in love with the tone.
I am moving a ton of air with the sweetest tone.

I tend to lean towards 10's and shy away from 15's. I didn't really like my Ampeg 15" and that has kinda kept me away from them.

I just picked up a TC RS112 cab and couldn't be happier with the sound.

If I look at what I currently own, I guess I really like 10's..... 2 x 410, 2 x 210 and the 112.

I'm using a Fender 215 Pro(4 Ohms) which is over priced but sounds great when used alone or with an Ampeg 610.

as you can see by how the discussion has progressed, nobody either cares or wants to be informed. they just want to believe what they believe and not have their beliefs shaken by the truth. suit yourselves, folks. but the only generalizations you can make about driver sizes are centered around beaming. you can't even say that more cone area = greater volume anymore.

i prefer 12s and 15s. 10's are okay but always seem to lack the earthshaking power that i love.

i've play through a 2x15 now, and i hope to add a 4x12 sometime soon. even my practice amp is a 12.

I'm using a Schroeder 212 at the moment but if it was a 210 and sounded this good I'd still be using it, I've got nothing against 10s.

I don't really pay attention to speaker diameter any more. A friend of mine's got an Ampeg 115 combo (flip-top, looks like some '90s take on the B15) and it's got the most amazing open and natural sound to it, certainly not what you'd expect when you think Ampeg and a single 15" speaker (I toured an Ampeg 2x15 one summer and hated the sound of it). I've borrowed it for recording a few times and it always sounds lush. No boom, no wool, no sludge, just a beautifully stringy, airy sound.

i think Ampeg's cabs are highly overrated. They make great heads, but their cabs aren't anything special, and you can get a lot more bang for your buck with other brands.
